Virtualization and containers are critical technologies for isolating and securing workloads running on Windows devices, and with AI scenarios becoming increasingly prevalent, they are more important than ever. You’ll be an integral part of a small and highly technical team, working on critical and strategic projects as you drive innovation across the industry. This is a highly visible and impactful role with a clear link to the success of Microsoft as a company. We are looking for an engineer who loves to learn, collaborate, and solve interesting challenges.

We are part of the Windows Kernel team within the Core OS organization and we deliver key container hosting and virtual machine (VM) memory management technology. The work from our team powers container products like Windows Sandbox as well as VMs across Windows and Azure, allowing them to be run securely and efficiently.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C and C++.
    • OR equivalent experience.

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of commercial software development experience in C/C++.
  • Familiarity with virtualization, containerization, or other sandboxing technologies.
  • Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems internals and concepts.
  • Experience with performance tools and analysis methodology is a plus
Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of engineers to design, implement, and maintain features for Windows and Linux containers, supporting traditional workloads and AI scenarios, using Hyper-V isolation on a Windows host.
  • Ensure long-term health and good architecture of the code base is maintained.
  • Partner with team members to integrate with key Windows and Hyper-V features for enhanced container operation.
  • Work with appropriate stakeholders to identify requirements and dependencies for new scenarios.
  • Collaborate with others on projects and ensure excellent communication is maintained with stakeholders.
