Our team, Azure Host Storage, is responsible for delivering the storage virtualization platform that supports Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Kubernetes Service, and containers. We own the entire storage stack on the Azure host, including input/output (IO) handling, data caching, throttling, quality of service, data encryption, and hardware offloading of IO processing. Our team has built the interposer and storage virtualization for the next generation of ultra-fast, industry-leading local Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) solid-state drives (SSDs) with Azure Boost, which offers 36 gigabytes per second (GBps) throughput and 6.6 million input/output operations per second (IOPS).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Rust OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in developing cloud scale production software
  • 4+ years of experience with storage, NVMe and PCIe
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in system design, algorithmic and problem-solving skills

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
    • OR related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++ or Rust
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++ or Rust OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience designing, building and running large scale and highly available cloud services or distributed systems
  • 4+ years of experience working in Kernel Mode Drivers, Storage solutions is big plus
  • 1+ year(s) of experience handling periodic live service on-call responsibilities and working in development and operations (DevOps) mode

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of next-generation Azure Boost solid-state drives (SSDs) for improved performance, availability, and reduced cost of goods sold (COGS).
  • Mentor the team in developing performance specifications and throughput targets for next-generation Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) and silicon platforms
  • Drive the identification of dependencies and the development of design documentation for products, applications, services, or platforms.
  • Create, implement, optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance, maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Leverage subject-matter expertise in product features and collaborate with stakeholders such as project managers to guide project plans, release schedules, and work item execution.
  • Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), guiding engineers by developing and following operational playbooks, monitoring systems for degradation or downtime, alerting stakeholders, and initiating recovery actions for both simple and complex issues.
  • Proactively seek new knowledge and adapt to emerging trends, technical solutions, and patterns to improve availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products, while promoting consistent monitoring and operations at scale.
