Overview

Are you ready to lead the development of industry-defining hardware? Microsoft’s Devices Team is seeking a Senior Hardware Engineering Lead to drive simulation-led design and product innovation across Surface and other next-generation devices. This is a high-impact leadership role for a technically strong and strategically minded engineer with a passion for solving complex, cross-disciplinary challenges.


You will bring deep expertise in mechanical and/or electrical engineering and lead design and simulation efforts—including structural, thermal, and electrical domains—to inform design decisions and ensure product performance. As a product or program lead, you will own technical execution from concept through launch, influencing architecture, driving cross-functional alignment, and delivering high-quality hardware at scale.

This role requires a strong ability to partner across disciplines—mechanical, electrical, reliability, manufacturing, and software—and to communicate effectively with both engineering teams and executive stakeholders. You will also help shape the future of engineering system at Microsoft by integrating AI/ML into simulation workflows and continuously improving tools and processes to accelerate innovation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 1+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience

Responsibilities

  • Apply deep mechanical and/or electrical engineering expertise to guide system-level design and integration
  • Influence technical direction and strategy across teams, mentoring junior engineers and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, presenting technical insights and trade-offs to both engineering and executive audiences
  • Act as a product or program lead, owning end-to-end technical execution from concept through mass production
  • Lead Multiphysics simulation & design efforts to lead innovative product design
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including design, reliability, manufacturing, and software to align on product goals and resolve complex challenges
  • Drive the adoption of AI/ML-enhanced simulation workflows to accelerate development cycles and improve predictive accuracy
