Overview
We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer with deep full-stack expertise and proven technical leadership skills to help drive these innovations and deliver best-in-class meeting experiences to millions of users. In this role, you will contribute across the full stack: from the user-facing web UI of Teams meetings to the highly scalable cloud services that power real-time communication. You will work closely with a talented team of engineers to design, build, and integrate new capabilities into the Teams platform, ensuring they are robust, secure, and performant. This is a high-impact, high-ownership, hands-on position. You will lead by example in architecture and coding, guiding the team on engineering best practices, and driving critical technical decisions that shape our product’s future. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Full-stack software development expertise, with direct experience in modern web UI development using JavaScript/TypeScript and frameworks such as React or equivalent.
- Experience building large-scale cloud-based services with 99.99%+ reliability and robust security practices, including familiarity with industry-standard authentication protocols and authorization approaches.
- 6+ years of technical leadership experience designing and implementing scalable architecture across frontend and backend systems, for projects involving 25+ engineers.
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- Experience collaboratively leading large cross-org initiatives or complex projects spanning multiple teams.
- Experience integrating Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) or large language model (LLM) technologies into production systems and familiarity with relevant frameworks.
- Experience in DevOps and Site Reliability, including CI/CD pipeline optimization, automated testing, telemetry, monitoring, and incident response for large-scale services.
- Experience with implementing cloud-based communication and/or media platforms (e.g., Azure Communication Services).
- Committed and continuous system improvement via automation and efficiency; experience optimizing engineering processes or leveraging automation.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
