Azure Boost is an advanced platform technology within Microsoft Azure that transforms how networking and storage are managed in the cloud. By offloading these operations to custom hardware, Azure Boost improves reliability, performance, and security at hyperscale. At the core of this innovation is the Linux System Group (LSG), which develops and manages custom Linux operating systems powering Azure Boost across millions of machines. The platform orchestrates agents that form both the control and data planes of Azure, supporting next-generation datacenter hardware and cloud infrastructure.

As a Senior Software Engineer in the LSG team, you will work on Azure infrastructure, contribute to open-source projects, and help define the roadmap for Linux operating system development at Microsoft. You will collaborate with upstream communities, engage with Linux and systemd maintainers, and influence practices that strengthen Microsoft platforms while contributing to industry standards. Your work will include building and maintaining components that enable Azure Boost to deliver secure and efficient cloud services.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.
• 2+ years of experience with Linux development or equivalent Unix systems.

Other Requirements

• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
• 4+ years of experience Linux System Programming .
  • Linux system programming, including processes, memory, networking, or filesystems.
  • Systemd, portable services, and container runtimes.
  • Hardware–software integration.
• 4+ years of Debugging and Development Skills
• 2+years Debugging skills using tools such as strace, perf, gdb, or similar.
• 2+years Large-scale distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or hyperscale datacenter environments.
• 2+years Contributing to open-source projects in the Linux ecosystem or equivalent collaborative development experience.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

• Design, develop, and maintain Microsoft’s custom Linux OS platform, driving improvements in reliability, performance, and security at hyperscale.
• Lead monitoring and troubleshooting efforts for our OS fleet, diagnosing complex OS health, performance, and deployment issues across the fleet.
• Drive code quality and best practices by authoring, reviewing, and mentoring others on OS component development, testing, and validation.
