Responsibilities
- In this role, you will utilize your design and analysis skills to take ownership of mechanical projects from concept to production, working with a team of engineers to develop innovative solutions for Microsoft’s cloud hardware infrastructure.
- You are expected to use your engineering expertise to conceptualize and communicate design intent to hardware teams and perform what-if scenarios that is typical in early product development.
- Working in conjunction with our ODM and SI partners, you will design mechanical components, systems, and assemblies using CAD software and create prototypes for testing and validation and facilitate their introduction into our products.
- You will create mechanical specifications and interface control documents and drive best practices for mechanical design across our product portfolio while ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
- You will be conducting design reviews, generating engineering documentation and developing test plans and reports including formulating DOEs, analyzing data and driving timely decision making to meet project schedules.
- Your designs will focus on ensuring part commonality, serviceability and safety, without compromising performance. You will be responsible for proactively selecting and evaluating materials to support Microsoft’s sustainability initiative and drive the re-use of materials across product families and product generations.
- As a senior mechanical engineer, you will perform structural statics and dynamics simulations to guide design improvements and maintain adequate design margin against likely failure mechanisms.
- You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including external vendors and suppliers to source components, lead design strategy, ensure robust performance prediction, review manufacturing processes, and ensure adherence to quality standards.
- You will provide engineering support to NPI teams by troubleshooting component and systems issues to enable a seamless integration of designs from development into production.
- You will provide engineering support to ECO and BOM management
- You are expected to stay abreast of the latest trends and advancements in mechanical engineering, in cloud infrastructure and data centre technologies, and propose innovative ideas to enhance our hardware offerings.
- ECAD-MCAD Collaboration: You will provide board outline and connector placement to electrical team. Use and interpret ECAD data, including EMN (board outline and component location) and EMP (component height and shape) files, to facilitate the mechanical design process.
- You will Import EMN/EMP file pairs into MCAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) to generate accurate 3D models of PCBs and component placements.
- You will Review and analyse component placement data from EMN/EMP files to identify and resolve potential mechanical issues, such as clearance conflicts, interference, and thermal management problems.
