Reinventing Big-Data Engine is happening NOW in Azure Data Explorer team (Kusto).

The team started as a small incubation 10 years ago and has already made a big impact within Microsoft.

Today, we are running a very large-scale cloud service (over 200k nodes), provide log analytics for hundreds of teams across all Microsoft divisions as well as external world customers.

We are looking for strong and motivated Service Engineer/SRE to help us continue driving the Azure Data Explorer / Real Time Analytics revolution and make it THE technology for log search and text analytics across all Microsoft as well as providing value to our external customers.

Responsibilities

As an SRE in Kusto your primary responsibilities will be:

  • Evaluate and contribute to product, service design and architecture, help shape Site Reliability Engineering strategies, review specifications, design and improve upon core processes

  • Design and adopt industry best practices for online services including disaster recovery, FMEA, business continuity, monitoring/alerting, and service health measurement, as well as writing nonfunctional code to improve availability and reliability, and develop automated solutions to reduce manual errors and improve productivity

  • Live Site Management – Almost all of Microsoft relies on Azure Data Explorer (Kusto) for keeping their business running. This fuels a lot of passion in our team to keep the systems working at high availability and performance. As an SRE, you will be part of a global team driving huge scale live sites 24X7 (with follow the Sun model) and are passionate about delivering the best service within Microsoft, as well as to external customers

  • Work closely with peer engineering teams on defining and implementing improvements to service monitoring and reporting to enhance reliability and capability.

  • Identify system problems and recommend monitoring solutions & automation to improve processing efficiency and stability.

  • Provide engineering design across different workloads including incident & problem management, change management, security and compliance.

  • Manage availability, capacity, and security to provide the best ROI with given workloads and environmental requirements against the given resources.

  • Design and manage all CI/CD processes for the product, collaborating with Developers from all groups.

  • Leverage AI-driven solutions for proactive incident management — including autonomous troubleshooting, predictive capacity planning, and automated root cause analysis etc.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, systems engineering, or industrial controls OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 5+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, or systems engineering

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ year(s) technical experience working with large-scale cloud or distributed systems.

  • 5+ years in the technology industry with broad engineering experience in improving Service Reliability, Availability and Performance

  • Understanding of cloud services is a big plus (preferably Azure)

  • Working knowledge of Database as well as Big Data systems is a plus

  • Understanding of BCDR

  • Understanding and working knowledge of CI\CD pipeline is a plus

  • Knowledge of system design & architecture, and running of complex, large scale online services

  • Ability to work effectively with customers both internal and external to Microsoft is a must

  • Deep understanding of cloud services (preferably Azure) , PowerShell, Git, and software security concepts
  • Experience with Azure is a big plus (experience with other cloud services like AWS is also a plus)
  • Ability to work as part of an On-Call rotation is a must!
  • Previous working experience in a DevOps engineering model
  • Understanding of Kubernetes and Linux , with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) as a plus.


Service Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
