Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Data Center Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core Data Center infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The Microsoft portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year Data Center construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate individual to help build the cloud Data Centers that power the world’s largest online services. Responsibilities
The Data Center Engineering (DCE) Senior Electrical Engineer will become part of the regional engineering team, responsible for the design development and continuous innovation of High Voltage Substations and related infrastructure for our Microsoft’s industry-leading Data Centers in APAC that power the world's largest online services.
We are looking for engineers with hands on electrical design experience. If you can design an electrical substation, understand the unique needs of Data Centers and are familiar with the constructability of varying High Voltage designs you may be a good fit. Engineers will be responsible for driving designs, must be capable of defining critical equipment specifications and driving solutions. Engineers will be involved in utility requirement discussion, indirectly support construction, and be a part of the process from site selection review through commissioning and ultimately turnover. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in the High Voltage Substation engineering field.
The HV Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the following:
  • Work within Regional Team and collaborate with Global Team to understand user requirements.
  • Participate in site selection reviews by validating HV Substation and identify power availability from the utility grid.
  • Work with the energy team and local utilities to understand and define site utility requirements.
  • Critical Data Center equipment design including HV Substations, site-wide MV infrastructure, Generators, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Switchgear, Transformers and Earthing.
  • Lead Substation designs to ensure compliance with IEC requirement, various APAC wide design codes and other AHJ requirements.
  • Design and collaborate with other disciplines to create a design and construction document set for HV Substation.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during construction phases.
  • Work with procurement team, regional vendors and manufacturers to specify and select the appropriate electrical equipment in HV Substation.
  • Work with commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Support the operation team on technical advice as Substation SME for substation systems
  • Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for site review, engineering evaluations, technical support and startup as needed.
  • Travel for Factory Witness Testing on key high voltage equipment
  • Be a leader within the regional team as well as external teams that support Microsoft’s Data Centers.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • Degree in an Electrical Engineering.
  • Cumulative 8+ years of experience with power systems and mission critical electrical design and emphasis of HV/MV Substation designs.
  • Excellent understanding of the various code and utility requirements across the APAC region.
  • Good technical knowledge of HV GIS/AIS Substations, HV primary and secondary systems, and Substation Automation System.
  • Fundamental understanding of critical HV, MV and LV electrical systems, power system modelling, protection schemes, ground & bonding and lightning protection.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of substation facility.
  • Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment/construction.
  • Ability to work across different teams such as design, delivery, and operation teams.
  • Highly motivated and dependable individual as a team player.
  • Adaptable, agile and organize in managing workload to meet deadlines.
  • Possess leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality, reliability, or maintainability.
  • The ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and present the justification to management.
  • Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.
While not required, we also look for the following Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineer
  • Master’s degree in an Electrical Engineering.
  • 8 years of experience directly related to HV GIS/AIS Substations and HV Equipment
  • 5 years of experience directly related to data center or mission critical facility design.
  • Detailed understanding of HV GIS/AIS Substation designs, power system modelling, relays, protections schemes, high-voltage circuit breakers, power and distribution transformers, MV Switchgear, LV Switchboards, grounding and earthing.
  • Consultancy and/or HV Turnkey experience with engineering skills associated with design, construction and project execution.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects.
  • Experience with large scale technical operations or large-scale mission critical facilities.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations.
