About the team and the role:
Azure Hardware Systems and Infrastructure (AHSI) is a diverse organization within Azure comprising more than 3,500 people across the United States in the Puget Sound, Silicon Valley, Hillsboro, Oregon and Raleigh, North Carolina, and internationally across Europe, Asia, and Australia. As Hardware Engineer Intern, you will support fleet‑scale hardware debug activities by assisting in the investigation of quality, reliability, and performance issues across deployed datacenter systems. Works under guidance from experienced engineers to collect and analyze failure data, execute standard debug procedures, and support root‑cause identification. Develops foundational skills in hardware debug tools, data analysis, automation, and engineering documentation while contributing to scalable and reliable fleet operations.
Internship Period: 12 weeks in summer of 2026 (May.~Sep.)
Target candidates: University students from related major who will graduate between Sep 2026 and Aug 2027

Responsibilities
- Assist in executing structured hardware debug activities for well-defined components or features under supervision.
- Collect and analyze failure data, platform logs, and test results from lab and fleet environments to support root cause investigations.
- Modify and extend existing code to develop basic automation that improves debug efficiency and repeatability.
- Support setup, execution, and teardown of debug environments, including remote debugging activities.
- Contribute to test case creation, basic automation scripts, and log analysis workflows to improve debug efficiency and repeatability.
- Prepare debug reports, failure summaries, and engineering documentation using established templates and procedures.
- Communicate debug status, findings, and blockers to subject matter expert (SME) teams and escalate issues as needed.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Masters’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Must have at least one additional quarter/semester of school remaining following the completion of the internship.
Preferred qualifications:
- Working knowledge of at least one scripting language (e.g., Python) for data collection, log parsing, or task automation.
- Foundational knowledge of hardware systems and components, gained through coursework, labs, or projects, relevant to server or datacenter platforms.
- Interest in hardware reliability, large‑scale fleet operations, and datacenter system architecture.
- Ability to read and follow technical documentation such as datasheets and hardware debug procedures. Strong documentation skills with attention to detail when recording debug steps, results, and observations.
- Effective communication skills and willingness to learn from senior engineers in a collaborative team environment.
