Overview

As an Applied Scientist, you will apply scientific and engineering principles to solve complex, real‑world problems and translate research into practical, production‑ready solutions. You will work at the intersection of research and engineering, collaborating closely with software engineers, research scientists, and product teams to design, develop, and deploy algorithms and models that directly impact Microsoft products and services.

In this role, you will leverage techniques such as statistical modeling, machine learning, experimentation, and data analysis to improve system performance, quality, and scalability. You will contribute to applied research efforts, support technology transfer into products, and help evolve existing methodologies or apply them in new contexts. This position offers the opportunity to grow technical depth, gain exposure to end‑to‑end solution development, and make measurable product and business impact while working in a highly collaborative, innovation‑driven environment.



Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement applied science solutions that improve product or system performance, quality, and reliability
  • Apply statistical modeling, machine learning, or optimization techniques to complex business or product problems
  • Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, and research scientists to translate research ideas into production systems
  • Conduct experiments, analyze large and diverse datasets, and clearly communicate insights and results
  • Contribute to the improvement of existing techniques, tools, or methodologies, or apply techniques in new contexts
  • Document work, share findings, and contribute to internal knowledge‑sharing and innovation
  • Follow best practices related to research ethics, privacy, and data security
  • Support onboarding and knowledge transfer within the team as needed


Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND relevant experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND relevant experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field OR equivalent experience.
  • Programming experience in one or more relevant languages (e.g., Python, R, C++, Java)
Additional or preferred qualifications
  • Experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).
  • Experience deploying models or algorithms into production environments
  • Familiarity with large‑scale data processing or cloud‑based platforms
  • Experience contributing to patents, white papers, technical blogs, or peer‑reviewed publications
