Overview

Printing is a fundamental utility of modern computing. Universal Print is Microsoft’s cloud‑based print service, part of the Windows and Devices organization, that replaces traditional print servers with a secure, scalable Azure platform integrated with Microsoft 365.

As a Software Engineer II on the Universal Print team, you will design, build, and operate production cloud services used by customers around the world. You’ll join a collaborative, startup‑style team within Microsoft with real ownership across the service lifecycle—from design and development to deployment and live operation. This role offers strong learning opportunities across backend services, cloud infrastructure, and management experiences while building reliable systems that customers depend on every day.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, test, and maintain features for a global cloud service.
  • Develop secure, reliable backend services and REST APIs using modern engineering practices.
  • Own features end‑to‑end, from requirements and design through implementation, deployment, and ongoing improvements.
  • Contribute to service reliability by monitoring health, investigating issues, and participating in live‑site support and on‑call rotations.
  • Build and improve automation for builds, testing, and deployments to support safe, repeatable releases.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and partners through design discussions and code reviews.
  • Apply security, privacy, and compliance principles when designing and operating production services.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages in C# or Java or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building, debugging, and maintaining production‑quality code.
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production software.
  • Experience developing services using C#/.NET or similar object‑oriented languages.
  • Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and distributed systems concepts.
  • Experience with Git‑based workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software development practices.
  • Solid understanding of software quality, including unit testing and basic integration testing.


Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building and operating cloud‑based, multi‑tenant services.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure or similar cloud platforms.
  • Understanding of authentication and authorization concepts.
  • Exposure to Windows OS internals, system services, or platform components.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and deployment tooling.
  • Frontend development experience using TypeScript and modern web frameworks.
  • Experience monitoring and operating live production services.
