Principal Software Engineer - Copilot Studio

The Copilot Studio Platform team sits at the heart of this mission. We are responsible for the execution, management, and runtime foundations that power copilots across Microsoft 365, Dynamics, and multiple other Microsoft products. This includes building and operating the management plane that enables secure provisioning, governance, lifecycle management, observability, and operational control at global scale, alongside highly scalable data and execution planes. We are driving the next wave of innovation in agentic AI, delivering a distributed execution environment designed to scale to billions of agentic executions.
Responsibilities
• Provide technical leadership for the architecture, design, and delivery of scalable, secure, and highly reliable platform services within Copilot Studio.
• Drive end to end system thinking by collaborating with cross functional partners to deliver scenarios spanning Azure, Microsoft 365, and the Power Platform.
• Mentor and influence engineers across the organization, raising the bar on design quality, technical rigor, and inclusive engineering culture.
• Partner with Product Management and engineering leadership to align technical strategy and investment decisions with long term product vision and customer outcomes.
• Define, operationalize, and champion engineering best practices across CI/CD, reliability, observability, and live site operational excellence at scale.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ years of experience working on AI-related systems.
Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience, including coding in one or more of the following languages: C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field AND 12+ years of equivalent technical engineering experience
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience designing, building, or operating services on Azure or other large‑scale cloud platforms.
- 7 + years of professional software engineering experience building or operating production services.
- Designed or led the architecture of at least one large‑scale distributed system used in production (e.g., cloud platform, backend service, or runtime system).
- Been Responsible for defining or enforcing engineering best practices such as CI/CD, reliability, observability, or live‑site operations for a team or service.
- Have hands‑on experience building, deploying, or operating services on a public cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP).

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
