Within the CO+I CTO’s office, we are hiring a Technical Program Manager (TPM) on the Energy Technology team to drive complex, cross‑functional programs at the intersection of energy technology, technology innovation, infrastructure, and large‑scale systems deployment. This role sits at the center of engineering, operations, commercial, and external partners to translate strategy into execution across fast‑moving initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the energy industry and/or data center industry and project management. They will also have expertise in program management and be capable of supporting a team that drives the development of a diverse mix of pre-commercial energy technologies and energy infrastructure. The individual will ideally have hands-on experience in energy systems technologies, understand datacenter system design, and be familiar with construction, commissioning, and operation of datacenters. This individual will also drive efforts to enhance energy technologies that operate across the energy system including generation resources, enhanced transmission and distribution technologies, advanced energy storage, demand response, distributed generation, and integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), ensuring resilient and adaptable power systems for global deployment.

"This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Redmond, WA, Atlanta, GA, San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, or Washington DC. Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates should relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location. This role is hybrid work, 3 days / week in-office"



Responsibilities

The Energy Systems Technical Program Manager will be responsible for:

  • Partnering with engineering, procurement, construction, business development, sustainability, and other relevant teams to identify and advance energy systems infrastructure solutions.

  • Creating relationships and rhythm to drive orchestration and integration efforts with internal teams and external partners and/or stakeholders to develop and implement complex cross functional energy technology programs.

  • Collaborating with relevant technical and business teams to contribute, prioritize, and deliver on the energy technology innovation roadmap.

  • Partnering with contributing teams and stakeholders to collect performance metrics, monitor and report on progress, and derive deep insights that lead to accelerated innovation.

  • Collaborating across global mechanical engineering teams to drive innovative approaches in distributed generation (DG), distribution, and flexible datacenter (DC) design.

  • Driving the integration of energy technologies in the data center environment and more broadly, such as scalable generation solutions, real-time load management, grid-interactive controls, and energy storage solutions, to optimize operational efficiency and support sustainability goals.

  • Evaluating and validating energy system technology proposals from outside vendors.

  • Partnering with the Microsoft Energy team and local utilities to define and review requirements, applying innovative energy systems technology solutions to enhance reliability and feasibility.

  • Collaborating with procurement, vendors, manufacturers, and engineering teams to source and implement state-of-the-art mechanical solutions for all projects.

  • Working with partner teams to assess and innovate in the use of innovative energy technologies, driving increased site utilization and efficiency.

  • Leading the selection and implementation of energy generation and flexibility technologies and vendors, and energy infrastructure to enable future-ready datacenter operations.

  • Applying deep expertise in energy systems to identify trends, develop roadmaps, and create innovative solutions for quickly evolving mechanical systems and a portfolio of designs.

  • Continuously innovating and proposing practical solutions, fostering a culture of creativity and technological advancement within the team.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 4+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years experience engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience reading and/or writing code (e.g., sample documentation, product demos).
  • Demonstrated background working with generators, turbines, fuel cells, and other generation technologies including familiarity with deployment timelines and ability to conduct feasibility studies in different regions.
  • Ability to develop energy technology roadmaps for advanced energy technologies.
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.
  • Expertise in energy systems, energy generation, microgrids, and datacenter energy systems, with deep understanding of energy systems and related datacenter infrastructures.
  • Knowledgeable in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and support data-driven decision-making, including experience using AI for research, summarization, analysis, and content development.

Technical Program Management IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
