Overview

Microsoft’s Worldwide Tax & Customs organization is responsible for global tax reporting, compliance, and process excellence that enables the business to innovate and scale responsibly. The Indirect Tax Group Manager plays a critical leadership role in ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant indirect tax reporting while continuously improving processes, controls, and reporting capabilities.

This role combines deep indirect tax compliance expertise with people leadership. The Group Manager leads a team of tax professionals responsible for indirect tax compliance activities, partners cross‑functionally with Finance, Tax Technology, Audit, and business stakeholders, and drives scalable, data‑driven solutions that strengthen Microsoft’s tax risk posture. Success in this role requires strong analytical judgment, the ability to translate complex tax and legislative requirements into clear operational guidance, and a demonstrated commitment to coaching, developing, and empowering others.



Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of indirect tax professionals, delivering results through clear prioritization, coaching, performance management, and a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and operational excellence.
  • Own indirect tax compliance operations, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely reporting through review of tax metrics, general ledger activity, reconciliations, and underlying tax data to identify trends, fluctuations, and risk.
  • Serve as process owner for indirect tax compliance, driving continuous improvement by streamlining procedures, strengthening controls, and partnering with Tax Technology to implement scalable, data‑driven solutions.
  • Monitor and evaluate legislative and business changes, assess impacts to indirect tax compliance, and document, communicate, and operationalize updated tax requirements across stakeholders.
  • Provide governance over registrations and business license requirements, ensuring appropriate oversight, documentation, and ongoing compliance as Microsoft’s business evolves.
  • Partner cross‑functionally with Finance, Controllership, and business teams to review and approve monthly compliance reporting, translating complex tax requirements into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Support internal and external audits and compliance inquiries, providing analysis and documentation, partnering with audit teams to assess findings, and implementing corrective actions to strengthen reporting integrity and controls.


Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications (RQs/MQs)

  • Advanced Degree (e.g., Master's in Business, Accounting, Finance, Taxation or related field; J.D.; LL.M. in Taxation) AND 7+ years tax compliance, tax accounting, tax audit management or tax advisory experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Tax, Law, or related field AND 8+ years tax compliance, tax accounting, tax audit management or tax advisory experience OR equivalent experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications (PQs)

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Laws (LLM), or similar certification.
  • 1+ year(s) people management experience.
  • 1+ year(s) project management experience.


Tax M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $116,900 - $203,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $148,400 - $222,600 per year.
