Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the CHSE (Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join the team.

Responsibilities
  • Understand customer requirements and high-level architectural design, execute electrical design at board level and system level, responsible for detailed design specifications.

  • Collaborate with internal design team (thermal, mechanical, firmware, OS) and external partner (ODM/OEM) for design implementation, ensure product functionality, performance, quality and reliability.

  • Perform complete and deep design review, including schematics, board files, BOM, DFT, DFM, etc.

  • Define board level bring-up and electrical test requirements, ensure complete coverage, execute or guarantee execution.

  • Work with partner teams to create system level bring-up and end-to-end validation test plans, ensure complete coverage, guarantee execution.

  • Troubleshooting, issue triage, leading hardware related debug efforts with partner teams, drive resolution and bug reports.

  • Architect and implement RTL (Register-Transfer Level) code for Programmable Logic Devices (PLDs), ensuring robust and scalable hardware logic aligned with system-level requirements.

  • Define and design computer boards and system-level solutions, including power and reset sequencing for high-performance platforms.

  • Develop, review, and deploy comprehensive testbenches and randomized verification environments to validate CPLD logic and ensure functional integrity across edge cases.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS / MS in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • 5+ years’ experience designing board and system level server products
  • 5+ years’ experience developing board and system level bring-up and test plans
  • 5+ years’ experience debugging board and system level issues for Cloud Servers
  • 5+ years’ experience architecting, implementing, and validating RTL code for CPLD/FPGA system management
  • Fundamental knowledge of the following hardware design principles: Computer Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Power Design, Signal Integrity
  • Experience executing hardware validation and functional test plans
  • Hands-on using high-speed scopes, bus protocol analyzer, logic analyzers, etc.
  • Experience working across disciplines and organizations
  • Excellent team player
  • Experience with high volume hardware production in server area
  • Experience with high-speed and high-power products design
  • Experience leading, planning and running regular status and execution meetings


Electrical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
