Overview

Microsoft Advertising is seeking a Principal Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for delivering high‑quality, customer‑facing web experiences at global scale.

This role is designed for a hands‑on engineering leader who combines strong people leadership with deep technical engagement. You will be accountable for driving execution, quality, and long‑term technical direction while staying close to the code, architecture, and day‑to‑day engineering decisions.

As a Principal EM, you are expected to operate with significant autonomy and influence, balancing short‑term delivery with long‑term platform health, and driving outcomes that matter to customers and the business.

Responsibilities

Hands‑On Engineering Leadership

  • Lead by example as a hands‑on engineering manager, actively engaging in architecture reviews, design discussions, code reviews( and sometimes code writing), and technical decision‑making
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the systems your team builds and operates, and step in to unblock complex technical challenges when needed
  • Set and uphold high standards for engineering excellence, including quality, performance, reliability, security, and accessibility

People & Team Leadership

  • Coach and develop engineers through career growth conversations
  • Create an environment of trust, accountability, and inclusion where engineers can do their best work
  • Build a sustainable team culture that balances delivery pressure with long‑term team health

Execution & Ownership

  • Own end‑to‑end delivery of engineering outcomes — from planning and design through implementation, launch, and iteration
  • Drive clarity on priorities, manage trade‑offs, and ensure commitments are met with a high bar for quality
  • Use data, operational signals, and customer feedback to guide decisions and continuous improvement

Technical & Strategic Influence

  • Shape technical direction and influence architectural decisions across related systems and partner teams
  • Partner closely with product, design, and other engineering leaders to align execution with business and customer goals
  • Identify opportunities to simplify systems, reduce complexity, and improve developer productivity

Cross‑Team Collaboration

  • Work effectively across organizational and geographic boundaries to deliver cohesive customer experiences
  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders, setting expectations and surfacing risks early
  • Model a One Microsoft mindset by sharing best practices, learning from others, and avoiding siloed solutions

Qualifications

Required Qualification:

  • 10+ years of engineering experience with proven experience as an engineering manager/architect delivering customer‑facing software systems
  • Strong technical background with the ability to engage deeply in system design and engineering discussions
  • Experience with modern web technologies and frontend systems
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, and decision‑making skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with building globally available, highly reliable user experiences
  • Proven experience in successfully driving execution across multiple concurrent initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to drive impact through a combination of hands‑on technical leadership and people management
  • Experience working in fast‑paced product environments where quality and velocity both matter

This position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
