The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

​​​Azure PostgreSQL is a fast-growing team within Azure Data at Microsoft, and we are seeking a Software Development Engineer II to join our organization. The team builds and operates a globally distributed, fully managed PostgreSQL service that supports mission-critical customer workloads at scale. We focus on delivering highly reliable, high-performance, and self-healing cloud systems. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy developing scalable services, tackling complex technical problems, and driving meaningful impact while continuing to grow their technical expertise.

Responsibilities
  • ​​​Design, produce and deliver software to improve the reliability, scalability, performance, security, and efficiency of a cloud service.
  • Contribute with fixing, enhancing, and supporting our services in production, including periodic on-call duties.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of automation solutions within production environments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the world to address all requirements needed to run enterprise-grade services.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, bug/issue triage with the feature teams, and support well informed decisions towards business and engineering goals.
  • Review and influence ongoing design, architecture, standards and methods for operating services and systems.

Qualifications

Required / Minimum Qualifications

  • ​Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.​
  • Global collaboration is integral to our work at Microsoft, and proficiency in English is essential for effective communication in this role.
  • Prior experience building or working with distributed systems or cloud-based services.

Preferred / Additional Qualifications

  • ​Learn and participate in code reviews to ensure code meets team standards, applying coding patterns and best practices with guidance.
  • Develop and implement code for product features, write testable, maintainable, and extensible code while using AI tools responsibly.
  • Assist in designing and testing solutions, exploring design options with oversight, and contribute to design documents and technical validation.
  • Support quality assurance efforts through executing test plans, including security testing, and learn to incorporate dependency and scalability considerations.
  • Apply and develop understanding of security principles in code and processes, contributing to security monitoring, incident response, and secure deployment practices.
  • Engage in reliability and supportability activities by monitoring systems, contributing to live site operations, telemetry integration, and incident management with supervision.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand user requirements and incorporate customer insights into product features while learning customer security and privacy needs.

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
