The Director - Communications Strategy, SME&C sits within the SME&C Executive Office and reports directly to the Chief of Staff. This role is responsible for shaping and driving the mid- and long-term SME&C narrative, while building an integrated communication strategy that connects all channels into a cohesive, high-impact storytelling engine.

This leader will translate business strategy into compelling narratives, ensure consistency across executive, field, and partner communications, and position Microsoft as the trusted partner for SME transformation. This role requires a balance of strategic thinking, storytelling excellence, and cross-org orchestration.

Responsibilities

Strategic Narrative Leadership

  • Define and evolve SME&C’s mid- and long-term narrative aligned to Microsoft’s broader strategic priorities (e.g., Frontier transformation, AI, partner-led growth)
  • Translate complex business strategy into clear, compelling, and differentiated storytelling for internal and external audiences
  • Build thought leadership positioning that strengthens Microsoft’s credibility and market leadership with SME customers and partners

Integrated Communication Strategy

  • Develop and drive a comprehensive SME&C communication strategy that connects executive messaging, field communications, partner engagement, and external storytelling
  • Ensure consistency of voice, message hierarchy, and narrative across all channels and touchpoints
  • Recommend and operationalize the most effective channels and formats for different audiences and priorities

Executive & Leadership Communications

  • Partner closely with senior leadership to shape key messages, presentations, and communication moments
  • Translate business priorities into clear executive-level messaging that drives alignment and action across the organization
  • Support key forums (e.g., leadership meetings, global events, major announcements) with strong narrative coherence

Cross-Org Orchestration

  • Drive alignment across marketing, sales, PR, partner, and field teams to ensure a unified SME&C story
  • Collaborate with global and regional teams to scale narratives effectively while allowing for local relevance
  • Serve as a central connector across stakeholders to drive execution of strategic communications initiatives

Storytelling & Content Development

  • Lead development of high-impact narratives, messaging frameworks, and core content assets
  • Guide storytelling across campaigns, executive platforms, and internal communications to reinforce strategic priorities
  • Ensure all communications connect back to business outcomes and reinforce Microsoft’s differentiation

Measurement & Optimization

  • Define success metrics and track effectiveness of communication strategies
  • Use insights and feedback to continuously refine narratives, channels, and tactics
  • Ensure communications efforts are data-driven and aligned to business impact


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, Finance, or related field AND 6+ years communications, marketing operations, field operations, program management, project management, or related experience
    • OR equivalent experience


Communications IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $130,900.00 - $251,900.00 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,600.00 - $272,300.00 per year.
