Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.
Microsoft’s India Development Center (IDC) is a key driver of innovation for Azure Data, SQL, and AI-powered services. As a Software Engineer II, you will build and operate large-scale, distributed systems that enable intelligent data-driven applications and next-generation technologies.
In this role engineers take end-to-end ownership of features and subsystems, contribute to system design, and influence technical decisions within their team scope.
You will work on Azure Data platforms (SQL) and increasingly on AI-native systems, including agentic AI architectures, helping Microsoft’s Data + AI ecosystem.

Responsibilities
Design, build, and release scalable and reliable products and cloud services around the database platform that has the largest footprint in the world across cloud and on-premises.
Contribute to building AI-enabled features and services to enable AI-powered scenarios in SQL ecosystem end-to-end, from Tools to the Engine
Identify opportunities and drive implementation for automation and AI-driven efficiency
Ensure strong adherence to data security, compliance, and governance
Drive improvements in service health, latency, and availability
Solving moderately complex, ambiguous engineering problems
Ensure performance, reliability, and scalability
Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, Automated testing and validation frameworks
Drive alignment across feature areas and dependencies
Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule (daytime hours only)
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or related field
4+ years of software engineering experience
Strong programming skills in C++, C#, Java, Python, or similar
Experience working on React/ Javascript/ Typescript
Experience with AI tools, AI Agentic workflows (multi-step reasoning, orchestration, automation)

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications
Experience building distributed/cloud-based systems
Understanding of Large-scale data processing and analytics systems
Experience with databases systems like SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL etc.
