National Grid is hiring a Lead Engineer, Electrical Planning and Design or Massachusetts. This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to one of our locations

Job Purpose

To manage & reduce National Grid’s SF6 (greenhouse gas) emissions. Ensure all Federal, MA, VT, and NH State and National Grid SF6 emissions reporting & goals are met or exceeded. Provide Substation Electrical Equipment technical expertise and support to Substation Construction and Maintenance, Substation Engineering & Design, and Transmission and Distribution Asset Management & Planning to maintain, improve reliability, and deliver long term sustainability of substation assets. At the lower levels, the role will require the understanding of the Substation Maintenance Standards and Procedures to ensure completion of maintenance activities to meet internal and external mandated requirements and to drive greater efficiencies. At the higher levels the role holder will take on more complex aspects of power transformer and High Voltage circuit breaker operating requirements including design reviews, factory inspections, and acceptance testing to support substation projects and system strategic spare requirements for successful completion of the National Grid maintenance and construction work plans.

Key Accountabilities

  • Supervise all SF6 handling to include filling of new SF6 gas insulated equipment (GIE), degassing of all retired SF6 GIE, and topping off all SF6 GIE.
  • Identify SF6 leaks during top-offs, receive repair materials, schedule outages and manpower, and supervise SF6 gas cart operation, repair procedures, refilling and testing.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repair of all SF6 gas handling equipment including gas carts.
  • Maintain necessary spare parts to prevent delay of leak repairs.
  • Prepare SF6 reporting data for quarterly internal reporting and for annual internal and federal reporting.
  • Manage a single site for SF6 cylinder storage for the geographic area.
  • Work with Substation Construction & Maintenance, Substation Engineering and Design, T&D Operations, Protection and Telecomm, Procurement, and Contracted Services personnel and undertake specific tasks of varying complexity in order to support colleagues for construction, maintenance, and emergency substation requirements.
  • Independently collate and analyze substation condition assessments for input in the capital budget and the establishment of maintenance criteria used to develop capital business plans and maintenance documents.
  • Participate in substation construction projects constructability meetings or asset replacement programs as designated project manager or team member to assist or facilitate the construction and completion of specifically assigned substation projects.
  • Work closely with manufacturers and vendors in the selection, application, design analysis, manufacturing inspections, transportation, installation, acceptance testing, and energization of major substation equipment.
  • Conduct oil and electrical test analysis and provide recommendations for continued use, follow up repairs, or replacement of substation assets.
  • Maintain an understanding of the Substation Maintenance Standards and Procedures, Engineering Documents, document management system, Material Procurement system, and Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Provide recommendation to engineers for the improvement and safety by design of substations based on working practices identified in the field, failure investigations, service or product advisories, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and mandated requirements to meet standards and safety requirements in line with National Grid policies and processes.
  • Working knowledge of regulations and internal standards (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, NESC, NEC, EPA, SMS, SMP, etc.).
  • Perform independently and/or assist engineering in the evaluation of new substation equipment, new technology, or materials used for substation construction and maintenance for inclusion in the approved vendor/manufacturer equipment engineering document.
  • In conjunction with engineers, Corporate Safety, Substation Construction & Maintenance, Global Procurement, and Asset Management develop and maintain systems, models and procedures in order to support construction and maintenance solutions to enhance efficiency and operability.
  • Research primary data sources and select relevant information in order to enable analysis of key themes and trends.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology from an ABET accredited engineering school
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience in an entry-level position, or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of National Grid's business operations, company policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation.
  • Willingness to travel.

Salary - $145,000 - $170,000
