The Role
We are looking for an experienced Counsel to join our APAC Employment Legal needs in the APAC region. This role has primary responsibility for handling employment counselling and litigation on a wide variety of employment issues arising in the APAC region. This role involves close and ongoing collaboration with the Talent (HR) organization in APAC. It demands a high-risk tolerance smartly applied to each situation and an experienced perspective on employment counseling. The ideal candidate will welcome the opportunity to be part of a fast-paced and entrepreneurial organization.
While this role will primarily focus on employment, it will also have hybrid responsibilities for managing general vendor (procurement) contracts for Southeast Asia and Taiwan that require efficient, effective, and risk-calibrated deal guidance and contract negotiation support to various corporate functions for vendor engagement. The anticipated hybrid work mix is about 80% employment legal and 20% procurement contracts.
This position is based in Netflix’s Singapore office and reports to the Director of Employment Legal, APAC, who is also based in Singapore. You will work closely with Global Employment Legal team members based in the UK, Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, and California, as well as the local corporate legal team members in APAC. This position will require some travel, particularly within the APAC region.
Responsibilities
Collaborate effectively with members of the Talent organization, Production HR, various production teams, and other business groups;
Provide subject matter expertise in our streaming and production businesses on employment-related matters in the APAC region and, where appropriate, training on a broad range of employment issues, such as recruitment, contingent workers, wage and hour compliance, fair employment practices;
Lead investigations into allegations of inappropriate conduct or misconduct and other employee relations issues (such as discrimination and harassment) and advise on performance management, reorganizations and terminations, with respect to streaming employees and cast/crew members on productions filming in various countries throughout APAC;
Proactively identify, assess, and balance employment law risk, and be able to offer practical, business-oriented, and creative solutions in partnership with the business teams;
Stay abreast of, and advise Netflix on, meaningful employment-related legal developments;
When necessary, manage employment-related litigation in APAC;
Actively collaborate with the Global Employment Legal team on global projects and issues;
Select, manage, and use outside counsel effectively;
Support Netflix’s commitment to maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace;
Support various corporate functions in managing general vendor (procurement) contracts;
Collaborate with the corporate legal team in managing vendor contracts and with internal business clients & cross-functional stakeholders in drafting and leading negotiations on vendor contracts; and
Develop, optimize, and manage contract and workflow systems; create and maintain information on our internal legal portal.
Qualifications
We welcome applicants who are qualified lawyers within the APAC region, with about 5 to 8 years of working experience. The ideal candidate will have strong business acumen and thrive in an environment where employees have the information and freedom to make impactful decisions for themselves. This is a highly cross-functional role, so strong collaboration and communication skills are required. Candidates with a mixture of firm and in-house APAC experience in advising on employment issues arising in both corporate and production (entertainment industry) settings, employee relations/investigations, and employment litigation experience in multiple countries in APAC are strongly preferred. Familiarity with working on issues in Korea and/or Japan, as well as fluency in Korean or Japanese, is a plus.
You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
You have deep knowledge of employment laws and have experience advising on employment issues across the APAC region;
You are able to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment;
You have strong analytical capabilities and judgment, and consistently exercise great judgment without agonizing, resulting in immediate action and smart decisions;
