The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is an independent research center housed at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Founded in 2008, the Research Alliance conducts rigorous studies on topics that matter to New York City’s public schools. We strive to advance equity and excellence in education by providing nonpartisan evidence about policies and practices that promote students’ development and academic success.
The Research Alliance invites applications for a Part-Time Writer and Editor. The person in this role will provide editing of research reports, policy briefs, blog posts, and other documents as needed. They will also draft written summaries of key findings and recommendations and support the widespread dissemination of Research Alliance work. We seek candidates from diverse backgrounds, particularly from groups that are underrepresented in education policy and research.
Responsibilities

Editing a range of Research Alliance documents, including research reports, policy briefs, blog posts, grant proposals, memos, data visualizations, surveys, social media content, etc.

Assist with the preparation of presentations and reports for diverse audiences of policymakers, practitioners, funders, community members, and researchers.

Write website, e-newsletter, and social media content that speaks to audiences’ needs and interests, and promotes the use of evidence from Research Alliance studies.

Support the release and broad dissemination of Research Alliance publications.
This position is considered Hybrid-Remote : The number of in person days and expectations for onsite work will be discussed with the supervisor.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary range for this position is $60-$90 . New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding, and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Qualifications

Master's degree, preferably in public policy, education, economics, statistics, or other relevant social science field.

At least 10 years of experience writing and editing, with a focus on translating academic research for non-technical audiences.

Demonstrated ability to develop clear, compelling messages.

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

Attention to detail under pressure. Ability to manage competing demands and complete tasks under time constraints.

Ability to take initiative, work independently, and work in a collaborative team environment.

Interest in/knowledge of NYC’s education system is essential. First-hand experience in NYC Public Schools is a plus.

Strong candidates are able to recognize how social/cultural biases may impact research, policy, and communications.
Compensation:
- $60-$90/hour depending on experience, approximately 5 hours per week from January through May 2025, with the possibility of extending the position.
