Description

The Center on Technology Policy at NYU is seeking a part-time Associate Research Scientist to lead our Online Expression and Online Safety research program. The position will conduct research and policy analysis on topics including age assurance, section 230 reform, U.S. state expression and child safety regulation, and social media design regulation--among others that concern the balance between protecting online expression rights and ensuring a safe and positive experience for users.

The Associate Research Scientist will produce both long and short-form writing on these topics. This includes both Center on Technology Policy-published white papers or blog posts, and articles for other outlets. The Associate Research Scientist will also organize virtual and/or in-person events and engage with the wider policy community. This includes fielding questions from policymakers, journalists, and other civil society members.

Under the direction of the CTP Director, this role is responsible for:

  1. Leading policy research and policy analysis projects at the intersection of online safety and online expression.

  2. Organizing, hosting, and/or participating in virtual and in-person events.

  3. Contributing to CTP media and communication efforts.

  4. Engaging regularly with policymakers and policy professionals.

  5. Advising and interfacing with NYU students regarding tech policy.

  6. Managing student research assistants.

  7. Providing strategic direction to CTP.

The strongest applicants will either come from a legal or academic background, have demonstrable technology policy research experience, and an understanding of current topics and debates in technology policy.
