Description

This position is for a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Environmental Studies at New York University, under the supervision of Adam Roddy. The chosen applicant will work on a funded project to conduct research on plant cognitive science and plant-inspired artificial intelligence (AI) geared towards (1) synthesizing work on these topics with a focus on creating new conceptual frameworks and reviewing previous computational modeling approaches, and (2) proposing big, testable questions at the nexus of AI, computational cognitive science, and plant biology, and formalizing these questions through case studies and new project designs.

Start date: April 1, 2026 or later. The duration of this appointment is limited to 8 months. This position is based in New York and the selected candidate will be expected to work onsite as of their effective start date.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in AI, computer science, and/or computational cognitive modeling, familiarity with a breadth of AI modeling approaches, strong writing skills, experience working in an interdisciplinary team, and comfort with uncertainty in thinking about interdisciplinary questions. Prior experience in plant biology is not required.

Minimum qualifications include a PhD in AI, computer science, computational cognitive science, or a related field and experience with applicable concepts as outlined in the job description.
