Responsibilities

What You'll Get To Do:

This management-level position located at the Panasonic Massachusetts Laboratory (PML) in Waltham, MA is responsible for leading business division R&D efforts and Tech Scouting in North America in close cooperation with the EMD R&D leadership in Kadoma, Osaka Japan.

Lead R&D Projects

  • Acting in concert with R&D in Japan drive technical development projects aimed at enabling, creating, and developing scalable new business opportunities for EMD.
  • Cooperate with other business functions like sales, marketing, factories and other regions to develop strategic and operational plans to bring new technologies to maturity.
  • Act as the primary regional R&D interface for external organizations including (but not limited to) OEM Customers, Fabricators, Universities, Industry Consortia, and Industry Organizations.
  • Collaborate with other Panasonic and PID business units like EMCBD and PDD to develop cross-organization opportunities leveraging the breadth of Panasonic technologies.
  • Maintain and prepare technical and business documentation and communication.
  • Manage the stage-gate process for product development.
  • Conduct “hands-on” research and testing as appropriate and feasible.

Marketing

  • Tech Scouting - This position is responsible for identifying and vetting new technologies, trends, and business opportunities in North America and elsewhere for internal use.
  • Conduct technical research.
  • Communicate technical trends and potential business and product development opportunities.
  • Gather and communicate salient technical, customer, market, and competitive information.
  • Attend relevant business and technical conferences.
  • Write and present technical papers and journal articles.
  • Effectively and professionally represent Panasonic Electronic materials business at industry events like trade shows, expos, and technical conferences.

Administrative

  • Team leadership - Manage and develop direct reports. Create and implement strategic and operational plans. Exemplify Panasonic ideals.
  • Be responsible for the safe operation of the Panasonic Massachusetts Laboratory in compliance with government regulations and Panasonic policies.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with sponsors, management, and colleagues in Japan.
  • Write reports and distribute as required. Complete monthly, weekly, and other reports in a timely manner.
  • Manage budgets, contracts, agreements, payments, etc. in compliance with company policies and rules.
  • Operate effectively in a complex organization. Gain the support of sponsors, champions, and other stakeholders to achieve objectives.
  • Collaborate with management, peers, colleagues, business units and other stakeholders.
  • Represent Panasonic values in a professional and competent manner internally and when working with customers, partners, conferences, and other internal and external interactions.
  • Exercise financial responsibility in terms of travel and other expenditures.

Scope:

  • This position will manage direct reports. At the time of hire, the business unit is in the process of building the EMD PML organization.
  • This position will be responsible for hiring and managing one or more R&D engineers in accordance with the objectives of the PML.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline. (Engineering, Chemistry, etc.)
  • More than 5 years of supervisor and/or management experience. (Managing direct reports)
  • More than 5 years of experience in developing polymeric electronic materials.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant industry technology. (Printed circuits boards, IC Packaging, Electronic Assembly, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to operate analytical equipment like DSC, DMA, TGA, Rheometers, microscopes, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate lab-scale formulation equipment like mixers, coaters, mills, presses, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, conduct and report experiments
  • Strong organizational, communication and presentation skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite with a strong knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed, including a valid passport, clear driving record and credit score.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% domestically. Ability to travel internationally four times per year.
  • Proven ability to work independently from a home office with minimal supervision.
  • this position is onsite in Waltham MA

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in applicable engineering or science.
  • More than 10 years of experience in electronic materials product development.
  • More than 10 years of management experience.
  • Multilingual (Japanese preferred)

Other Requirements:

  • 50% travel (mandatory) some of which may be International
  • Laboratory duties as required.

The wage range of $160,000 - $190,000 is just one component of Panasonic’s total package. Actual compensation varies depending on the individual’s knowledge, skills, experience, and location. This role may be eligible for discretionary bonuses and incentives.
