Job Description

What is the opportunity?

We are seeking an experienced Technical Leader to lead a team responsible for a mission-critical FX settlement platform built on HP NonStop (Tandem) within Capital Markets at RBC. This system plays a central role in global capital markets operations, and we are actively modernizing it with APIs, microservices, and distributed data solutions.

This role is a unique blend of leadership, legacy stewardship, and modernization strategy. You will manage and mentor a team of engineers, ensure reliability of today’s operations, and drive forward the evolution of tomorrow’s architecture.

What will you do?

  • Lead a development team supporting and enhancing the FX settlement platform

  • Manage delivery of both legacy system enhancements and modernization initiatives

  • Provide technical direction across COBOL, TAL, Enscribe, and modern technologies (Java, APIs, microservices)

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure system reliability and alignment with global settlement requirements

  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, building the next generation of NonStop and modernization expertise

  • Oversee development practices, code reviews, and release processes to maintain high quality

  • Shape the technical roadmap balancing stability, regulatory requirements, and innovation.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-haves:

  • 8+ years of software development and engineering leadership experience

  • Proven track record of managing development teams in financial services or capital markets

  • Strong understanding of high-availability, mission-critical systems

  • Experience with legacy technologies (COBOL, mainframe, HP NonStop/Tandem, or equivalent)

  • Familiarity with modern architectures (Java, APIs, microservices, distributed data, cloud)

  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • FX, payments, or settlement operations experience

  • Prior involvement in legacy-to-modernization initiatives

  • Exposure to operational data stores (ODS), event-driven systems, or real-time payment rails.

What’s in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses and flexible benefits, competitive compensation, commissions, and stock where applicable

  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities

  • Flexible work/life balance options

  • Opportunities to do challenging work

  • Opportunities to take on progressively greater accountabilities
