Job Description

The number of hours will depend on the hours of availability of the candidate.

The primary activity of the Materials Testing Group is mechanical testing of rock specimens to provide inputs to geomechanical analyses projects. Supplemental activities could include handling and storage of rock core; preparation of rock samples used for testing; data reduction and analysis; calibration and maintenance of laboratory test systems; support for preparation of technical reports; building mining instrumentation; and general building maintenance. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of experienced engineering staff in these areas.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Currently enrolled in high school or have recently graduated
  • Strong computer skills, especially in spreadsheets, is required
  • Previous experience operating a forklift is beneficial, but training will be provided to the right candidate
  • Must have excellent organizational skills
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, or be turning 18 within 3 months after starting employment.

This position will involve the preparation of rock test specimens and fabrication of deformation measurement instruments using the following equipment:

  • Manual lathe
  • Manual vertical mill
  • Horizontal band saw
  • Vertical band saw
  • Tile saw
  • Surface grinder
  • Box and pan brake
  • Common hand tools

Prior experience in use of these tools and equipment is preferred, but training can be provided to the right candidate.

Additional Information

Compensation: Hourly wage depends on education and experience, range is $15-18/hour, plus statutory insurance requirements.
