Senior Manager, Credit Controls and Portfolio Risk Management, Canadian Commercial Banking

Purpose:

Reporting to the Director, Credit Controls and Portfolio Risk Management, the Senior Manager, Credit Controls and Portfolio Risk Management supports the COO, Canadian Commercial Banking in achieving Canadian Commercial Banking’s strategic goals.


This position leads Issues resolution, Policy and Processes, Portfolio Credit risk management, Lending programs and Projects through ongoing collaboration with various internal partners such as Banking, Risk Management, Business Banking Operations, Legal, Compliance, Audit, Group Treasury, etc.


The ideal candidate brings strategic vision, operational rigor, and deep expertise in credit risk management to drive sustainable growth and resilience.


Accountabilities/ Primary responsibilities:

Issues Management:


• Lead the identification of root causes, assessment, and resolution of compliance, regulatory, audit, and self-identified issues.
• Ensure timely remediation of findings and issues in accordance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate with Compliance, Internal Control and Audit to manage action plans and document evidence of remediation.


Policy and Process:


• Develop and implement strategic solutions for Canadian Commercial Banking’s credit and operational policies and processes with a client centric focus ensuring regulatory compliance and efficiency.
• Assess existing policies and processes for gaps and inefficiencies, driving continuous improvement and alignment with regulatory requirements, industry best practices and Canadian Commercial Banking’s strategic priorities.
• Communicate, train and support business line staff on updates or new requirements arising from completed initiatives.

Portfolio Risk Management:


• Oversee, monitor, and report on Canadian Commercial Banking’s portfolio credit risk, identifying trends and potential areas of concern.
• Develop and deliver timely reports for executive leadership, including early warning reports, portfolio trend analysis and industry review summaries.
• Develop ad hoc reports as requested by Canadian Commercial Banking’s Executive leadership.
• CCB champion for industry reviews including strategy and portfolio limits recommendations and profitability analysis.
• Perform reasonability tests to ensure accuracy and credibility of data used to support decision-making and administration of portfolio management.

Lending Programs:


• Collaborate with key stakeholders to define business requirements.
• Develop, obtain requisite approvals and implement Lending programs aligned with Canadian Commercial Banking’s strategic goals and risk appetite.
• Monitor Lending program performance and make enhancements based on data analysis and feedback.
• Manage Government lending programs including assignment, internal and external inquiries and monthly reporting.

Projects:


• Design, deliver and implement projects or new initiatives to contribute to credit and operational effectiveness of Canadian Commercial Banking.
• Serve as the business line expert on credit and loan system upgrades, ensuring business requirements are accurately captured.
• Participate in project teams initiated by other departments which will have an impact on Canadian Commercial Banking.

Education / Experience / Other Information:


• Undergraduate degree required in Finance, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics. Master’s degree (MBA or related discipline) or relevant professional certification (e.g., CRC, FRM, CFA) is preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years’ experience in credit risk management, commercial lending, or portfolio oversight in a financial services environment.
• Demonstrated experience with policy development, process improvement, and regulatory compliance.
• Excellent communication (oral and written), strategic influencing and stakeholder management abilities.
• Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines with competing demands and priorities.
• High proficiency in MS Office products.
