Purpose
Contributes to the overall success of the Equity Investments team in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities are conducted in compliance with governing regulations, and internal policies and procedures.
Accountabilities
- Championing a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leveraging broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
- Contributing to the active management of the public and private equity investment portfolios for both the Bank’s Treasury Investments and Scotiabank’s Pension Plan (with combined assets under management of ~$4 billion).
- Analyzing and researching potential public and private investments with a high level of independence and making investment recommendations to Directors and Managing Director.
- Taking on greater oversight of multiple industry subsectors to become a trusted resource/expert for the team. Initiating new investment ideas within these sectors and monitoring existing investments to identify optimum use of capital within the context of the portfolio(s).
- Providing value-added and forward-looking perspectives on the industries and companies under purview, as well as regular investment thesis updates. Assuming a greater role in team discussions regarding portfolio construction, strategy, positioning and philosophy.
- Coaching and training Investment Analysts and other team members on investment and operational processes.
- Preparing highly detailed company research write-ups, financial models, and comprehensive valuation analysis
- Helping complete the diligence and subscription process for new private equity investments and obtaining all required approvals.
- Following market news, evaluating market data and gathering macroeconomic data to inform analysis on sector-specific and broader market trends. Responsible for keeping abreast of the market dynamics of both public and private equity landscape.
- Participating in meetings with sell-side analysts, company management teams and investor relations personnel for public equity portfolio.
- Participating in meetings with general partners, other limited partners, and industry experts for private equity portfolio.
- Contributing to stakeholder investment reports, including Quarterly Investment Committee package and Pension Investment & Administration Committee packages.
- Completing special research projects as required.
- Preparing, analyzing and presenting portfolio statistics to inform efficient portfolio construction.
- Reporting on portfolio performance for both public and private equity investments and assisting with portfolio performance attribution analysis.
- Managing and reconciling daily valuation reports.
- Managing investee corporate actions, including voting proxies and dividend elections.
- Booking trade tickets into the appropriate IT systems, when required.
- Working with internal and external back-office personnel to resolve trade settlement issues.
- Handling operational requests from internal Scotiabank departments including audit, accounting, product control, risk management and compliance.
- Taking initiative and looking for ways to continuously improve status-quo processes.
- Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
- Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

Education / Experience / Other Information
- Completion or progress towards completion of CFA is required.
- University degree in business, economics or another relevant field preferred.
- CA designation or MBA an asset.
- Experience with Bloomberg and financial modeling required.
- Superior analytical, financial, quantitative and information technology (MS Office) skills required.
- Passionate about investing, curious mindset and self-motivated.
- Team player with strong written and communication skills.
Working Conditions
- Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. Potential for travel. May have constant time pressures with steady flow of requests with mandated deadlines. Workload is continually subject to reprioritization due to changing global market conditions.
