Job Description:
Stantec is a leading global consultancy firm providing engineering design, program management, technology solutions, and procurement support to Energy & Resources (E&R), infrastructure, water, wastewater, Buildings, and the environmental industrial sectors across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region.
Stantec is looking for Substation Structural Engineer who can contribute and foster the growth of Stantec Resource Net India Private Ltd, Pune by providing technical expertise for the Energy & Resources BU in Structural/Electrical disciplines. Substation structural engineers (within the Energy & Resources BU of Stantec) plan, design, and deliver engineering projects primarily in substations, transmission and distribution, and power generation sectors. They may also be engaged with O&G, mining, and other heavy industrial process plants when required.
A Substation Engineer carries out engineering assignments of moderate to complex levels. Under the general supervision and direction of a Lead/Regional Engineer, this role is responsible for a project or part of a project requiring sound knowledge of conceptual design, FEED/outline design, and detailed design for Substation and industry projects. This role involves supporting other engineers, providing technical expertise and guidance, assisting with preparing proposals and cost estimates, and managing a small team of Substation engineers and designers to ensure workload engagements, training, and upskilling. The successful candidate will ensure that project outcomes meet schedule, technical, and quality standards, fulfilling both client and Stantec expectations.
Key Accountabilities:
• Prepare plans, specifications, and design packages for Substation projects.
• Produce technical presentations and design drawings.
• Perform detailed studies, transmission line modeling, and design tasks associated with utilities or other projects, under the supervision of a regional lead/project engineer.
• Support construction projects by responding to site RFIs.
• Optioneering and outline design relating to Substation and Industrial projects.
• Prepare technical reports, drawings, and sketches.
• Perform detailed design and engineering calculations of substation structures to comply with client standards, specifications, and relevant industry standards.
• Guide the Engineering/CAD team for quality delivery and ensure that Stantec Design Practices are followed.
• Perform QA/QC on projects before submittal to the client.
• Prepare cost estimates for engineering and construction packages.
• Develop a bill of materials required for construction based on client standards.
• Develop permit drawings as necessary to accommodate construction.
• Analyze and evaluate issues and complexity related to project packages and assist the lead in mitigating them.
• Knowledge of concrete and steel structures – analysis and design.
• Carry out other duties as assigned by the supervisor/management.
• Occasionally required to work off-hours for regional coordination
Specific Experience:
• Master's/bachelor's degree in civil/Structural Engineering.
• 6 to 10 years of experience in **transmission and distribution projects.
• International substation experience is must. Experience with UK/ US National Grid projects preferred.
• Proficient in industry-standard software such as STAAD Pro, SAP2000, Mathcad, RISA, Tekla Tedds.
• Proficiency in design using UK and/or North American (NA) codes and other regulations related to substation and industrial projects is essential.
• UK Codes: Eurocodes (e.g., Eurocode 2 for concrete, Eurocode 3 for steel),
US Codes: AISC, ACI, ASCE (e.g., ASCE 7 for loadings, ASCE 113 for substation design), UK/ US National Grid standards and specifications.
• 3D/2D design experience/awareness using the following Software applications will be an added advantage:
Autodesk Revit
Autodesk AutoCAD
Bentley MicroStation
• Experience in short circuit force, breaker force, seismic and wind load analysis.
• Preferred knowledge of electric utility systems, policies, and procedures, including EMF, fault current, grounding, contaminant studies, and clearance analysis for transmission line design.
• Requires broad knowledge of electrical substation structural design and industrial utility power projects, including familiarity with civil engineering, electrical engineering, and other disciplines required for these projects.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and Office.
• Demonstrate solid leadership and communication skills.
• Flexibility to prioritize and work on multiple projects with various due dates and scopes.
• Ability to contribute effectively and collaboratively to the team by sharing knowledge, promoting ideas, and valuing the contribution of all team members.
• Innovative, result-oriented, and proactive in developing and implementing new ideas.
• Experience with Data/Document management systems (e.g., ProjectWise, BIM360) will be an advantage.
• Competent in baseline skills, including professional attitude, strong written and verbal communication, and attention to detail.
• Flexible attitude to accepting different work assignments, with a proactive approach to execution and delivery.
• Thorough knowledge of international safety and HSSE regulations.
