Your Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Electrical Engineering group in the Bakersfield, California. Remote or hybrid work may be considered. You will provide a guidance to Junior Electrical Engineer, Design and drafters which will require a good mentoring capability and skills. A Senior Electrical Engineer will perform a variety of tasks which may include electrical design, equipment specification, data sheets, calculations, and field work.
You will have the chance to work in a multi-discipline team executing projects in our rapidly growing and evolving Renewable Energy sector where we are helping lead energy transition projects worldwide.
Your Key Responsibilities
Supports project team in development of electrical design documentation, plans and reports for relevant project design elements.
Apply knowledge of industry standards and electrical engineering design principles.
Apply knowledge of electrical power design in support of a range of projects, including power generation (thermal and renewable) plants, industrial plants, and water/wastewater treatment facilities.
Apply knowledge of one-line drawings, elementary diagrams, and wiring diagrams, equipment specifications (including transformers, UPS, MCC, VFDs, switchgear, substation equipment); develop delectrical data sheets, power plans, electrical area classification, conduit plans, cable schedules, system studies and protective coordination relay settings.
Apply knowledge of power systems ranging from Low Voltage to Medium Voltage distribution and transmission systems.
Provides leadership, guidance and mentoring to junior staff.
Routinely interact with, manage, electrical power providers companies, and serve clients.
Lead the electrical design on renewables and other energy projects of varying sizes and complexities, including solar photovoltaic (PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), wind generation, combustion generation, standby power, and knowledge of associated microgrid design principles.
Engages in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats including 3D design tools.
Utilizes technologies in development of three-dimensional models of electrical systems and provides markups for junior engineers.
Prepares and revises documentation in various project phases including site plans, floor plans, single line diagrams, wiring diagrams and details mostly for heavy industrial, water, renewable projects and generation projects.
Performs electrical calculations using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
Leads project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, client and contractor, subcontractors, and vendors.
Participates in client project meetings, value engineering and basic cost estimating.
Leads the preparation and coordination of the project specifications, standard electrical operational procedures, electrical construction work package documents.
Work as a contributing team member within a multi-discipline team to ensure compatibility with design intent.
Develop Electrical Design Basis Memorandum (DBM).
Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.
Assists in the development of new standards and specifications for the electrical group.
Ability to perform on-site design services, and field engineering work.
Develops and manage project scope, budgets, staffing, schedule, and design approach for all size projects.
Assists with the development of proposal and engineering level of effort for smaller, less complex projects.
Contribute to our culture of continuous improvement by sharing lessons learned.
Support Leadership in resource management processes, recruitment, succession planning.
Oversees multiple Electrical Engineering projects.
Participates in constructability review meeting.
Ensure all work is completed with safety of paramount concern.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
A self-starter, skilled and experienced engineer able to resolve electrical engineering design issues and develop project scope documents, technical reports, cost estimates and project proposals.
Oil & Gas Upstream involving production surface facilities & treatment.
Familiarity with Energy Transition projects such as PV Hydrogen Fueling Station design, Carbon Capture Usage and Storage (CCUS).
Record of successfully delivering projects on-time and on-budget, while maintaining high standards of quality.
Experience and proficiency using ETAP, PVSsyet, Easypower, and SKM software, including utility modeling conducting load flow analysis, Arc fault and coordination studies.
Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written. This position will require frequent client interaction and associated documentation.
Presentation and interview skills would be an asset.
Team player, collaborator with interpersonal skills with experience in managing and coordinating people.
Thorough understanding of design standards and codes common to industrial facilities.
Ability to provide detailed power system designs for generation plants (Combustion, PV, BESS, etc.) with system voltage ranging from Low Voltage (0 – 1 kV) to Medium Voltage (1 kV - 64 kV).
Familiar with design and operation of power systems ranging from 120V to 35kV distribution and 69kV – 500 kV transmission systems.
Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and applicable energy codes.
Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
Strong knowledge of electrical systems, means, methods, materials, and industry standards.
Comprehensive understanding of design standards and codes related to renewables and for electrical power systems.
Knowledge of renewable energy systems, including photovoltaic (PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and microgrids. Experience with Onshore Wind, Offshore Wind and other forms of conventional generation would be an asset.
Ability to travel to US and Canadian offices and client sites, as required.
Ability to lead one or more teams through all phases of project document production.
Checks the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manages time to meet project budget and schedule.
Participates and collaborates in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
Advanced understanding of electrical engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others, including mentoring staff.
Strong presentation and interview skills.
Proficient in the Microsoft 365 platform including Teams and SharePoint. Expert skills in Microsoft Excel would be a benefit.
Working knowledge of Google Earth, Bluebeam Vu, Navisworks, AutoCAD viewer tools.
Must have a good driving record and valid driver’s license.
Prior to employment with Stantec, the candidate may be required successfully pass a physical and drug/alcohol screening, if applicable.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited University. Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
Minimum of 15-20 years of experience in Electrical engineering & design.
Experience in utility power plants and industrial facility projects is preferred.
Prior experience in consulting for an A/E firm supporting industrial facilities or an EPC contractor is preferred.
Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to obtain within one year of accepting position is a plus.
Typical office or home-office environment working with computers and remaining stationary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to industrial process equipment and the elements including inclement weather.

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
