Your Opportunity
Stantec’s Urban Planning and Design Studio in Calgary is growing across Western Canada and we are leading an increasing amount of high profile and complex planning and development projects with multi-disciplinary and integrated service offerings. This includes downtown and established area master plans and strategies, mixed-use and residential master plans, public realm master plans, intermunicipal planning and servicing strategies, business case development, and transit-oriented communities.
We are seeking an experienced planning/design professional with a passion for leadership who relishes complex project delivery, working with large teams, driving project outcomes, and has an excellent understanding of the entire development process.
Your focus in the role of Urban Transformation Manager will be leading projects, teams and strategy, managing client interface, and bringing your subject matter expertise to inform and offer value to our clients. In addition, you will supervise relevant staff alongside our Urban Planning Manager. Working with other members of the team, you will also have the opportunity to act as a resource and mentor and support their continued growth within the planning profession. As a 32,000 person interdisciplinary firm, the business opportunities within Stantec are endless. At the same time, our planning and design team in the Calgary office totals thirteen staff which provides for a close working environment.
In addition to project and team leadership, this role includes providing senior guidance to ensure design integration across projects. The successful candidate will also be a key member in team leadership and business development strategy.
Your Key Responsibilities
Work cohesively as a team with our Urban Planning Manager and Landscape Architecture Manager and associated teams to grow the Urban Transformation focus within our portfolio
Lead, plan, and direct land development planning work throughout the life of a project to successfully deliver to the client.
Maintain and strengthen client relationships and play a key role in client management and satisfaction.
Manage complex and comprehensive planning and development projects, including Outline Plans, Development Permits, redevelopment and neighborhood plans and strategies, municipal policy projects, as well as main streets projects and inner city brownfield redevelopment
Utilize your knowledge of provincial and local planning policy in the preparation and management of planning, policy, and urban design studies.
Organize and support public consultation programs including making recommendations of key findings to the client.
Support business development and marketing key initiatives including strategic planning, opportunity identification, proposal pursuit and preparation, client liaison, preparation of on-line marketing content and social media monitoring, with a focus on Urban Transformation
Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate the technical aspects of projects for the team.
Supervise, coordinate and review the work of other professionals who assist in specific assignments.
Interface directly with clients and provide clear, well-articulated and solution-oriented recommendations.
Demonstrate active coaching skills when interacting with other team members.
Create and maintain relationships with other practice areas to promote cross-selling and interdisciplinary work.
Serve as Chair of Urban Design Coordination, providing senior-level guidance to ensure cohesive design strategies.
Participate in Leadership Team activities and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making.
Attend and contribute to Business Development meetings to support business development efforts.
Engage in Urban/Major Projects or Land Strategy initiatives, depending on expertise.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Ability to lead complex community, land, site development and planning/urban design tasks with a strategic, outcome-oriented mindset.
Strong client management and communication skills.
Highly effective in assembling and leading multi-discipline teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Comprehensive understanding of land use and development processes, applicable government regulations and planning policy/theory.
In-depth knowledge of planning policies and processes in Alberta, specifically in the Calgary region.
Familiarity with landscape architecture best principles
Experience presenting before Planning Commissions and Councils.
Strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to identify challenges and opportunities and develop actionable solutions Efficient project management of multiple concurrent projects, PMP accreditation an asset.
Strong understanding of Microsoft Office suite and comfortable leveraging digital tools to support planning and project management.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent in Planning and/or Urban Design.
7 years of experience in public and private sector community planning
Experience leading multi-disciplinary projects.
Full CIP/APPI membership.
Typical office environment working with computers. Stantec is proud to offer a hybrid working environment and the opportunity to work from our local office and your home office may be considered. May occasionally visit study areas, construction sites and/or be exposed to outside elements and inclement weather conditions.
