Your Opportunity
To be successful as a Senior Healthcare Planner in the Health Sector, a collaborative mindset is essential. You will be supported by the full breadth and depth of the Global Health Sector team and will have the opportunity to develop integrated design proposals for cutting edge and world-class projects in partnership with top tier marketing, while leading and mentoring others and collaborating with team members to contribute to the final deliverables—bringing inspiration to your daily practice
Your Key Responsibilities
Lead the strategic healthcare planning and pre-design activities for major healthcare projects, typically ranging from 80,000 to 800,000 sq. ft., including acute care, ambulatory/outpatient services, long-term care, and specialized facilities.
Collaborate with internal architectural, engineering, and interior design teams across North America to develop integrated, high-performing healthcare environments.
Facilitate user engagement processes, including clinical visioning sessions, functional programming, flow mapping, space listing, and consensus-building workshops with diverse stakeholder groups.
Translate clinical, operational, and cultural needs into space requirements and design strategies.
Support or lead the development of healthcare master plans, functional programs, and business cases aligned with CSA Z8000, regional planning frameworks, and client-specific directives.
Contribute to project delivery innovation through knowledge of Lean planning principles and evolving healthcare delivery models.
Participate in business development activities, including client relationship building, proposal writing, interview presentations, scope and fee negotiations, and competitive positioning.
Serve as a local and regional thought leader representing healthcare planning excellence and contributing to the advancement of Stantec’s global healthcare strategy.
Mentor other planners and design staff, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team culture.
Share innovations and best practices through industry forums, client workshops, and internal knowledge-sharing platforms.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Recent healthcare planning experience, with a focus on facility planning and pre-design services. Portfolio may include but is not limited to acute care, outpatient/ambulatory care, behavioral health, cancer care, women’s health, and/or seniors’ living.
Strong understanding of healthcare facility functional programming, master programming, healthcare workflows, clinical zoning, and CSA Z8000 compliance.
Proficiency in lean planning concepts, mapping the 7 flows of medicine, and development of special requirements and schedule of accommodations.
Proven ability to lead user group sessions, facilitate interdisciplinary workshops, and integrate diverse perspectives into cohesive planning outcomes.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience contributing to or leading pre-positioning strategies, RFP responses, and interview presentations as part of major healthcare pursuits.
Interest and aptitude for exploring emerging healthcare trends, technologies, and delivery models.
Strong time management, coordination, and leadership skills, with a track record of managing multiple priorities and deadlines in parallel.
Education and Experience
Licensed and credentialed Architect, Interior Designer, or planner is preferred
10+ years of experience in healthcare planning and design is preferred.
