Our hydro team is seeking a Senior Hydropower Project Manager – Civil Engineer who understands the needs of our clients and can match them with Stantec’s service.
The successful candidate will function as a “seller/doer” and has experience with design, construction and/or operation of dams, spillways, intake structures, water conveyances and powerhouses and/or the associated equipment of gates, valves, turbine-generator units and balance of plant. Further, experience with managing people and projects is required.

Your Key Responsibilities
Strengthen Team
Observe and personify safety and quality culture
With high-level guidance but responsible for approach and execution, develop solutions to a variety of diverse engineering problems involving hydropower structures or equipment
Perform field support during installation and construction through monitoring for quality control and consistency with the design specifications
Prepare quality and accurate written communications related to role such as: notes of meeting, scopes of work, change orders, reports, design basis, options analyses, schedule and cost estimating, etc.
Lead/support development of design drawings and technical specifications for construction and installation services
Manage and motivate team to work together efficiently and mitigate team conflict
Assist in resource management processes, recruitment, career development, succession planning, coaching and mentoring
Understand skills, capabilities and opportunities for collaboration in Stantec’s business lines across Canada, as well as support international collaboration when required.
Understand the complexity of a given client project and match with appropriate scope of work, level of effort and staffing
Improve Effectiveness
Work collaboratively with Project Engineers and other Project Managers to assist in planning, design, preparation of drawings, technical specifications, and capital cost estimates in connection with a variety of engineering projects
Communicate with other team members and become familiar with Stantec standards
Contribute to the development and execution of the sector’s business strategy
Meet personal Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) goals and targets
Communicate at ease and habitually across the corporate hierarchy
Understand project management principles and apply consistently according to Stantec 10-Step process
Understand and appropriately apply Stantec’s risk review process
Scale administrative process to size and type of application and identify potential for improvements
Grow Business
Support/Lead relevant business development pursuits through early positioning and proposal development
Contribute to the development of hydropower sector and business planning
Balance time on projects with pursuit and positioning of new business opportunities
Stay abreast of the hydro sector (clients, technologies, competitors, trends)
Communicate comfortably with clients across their hierarchy from boardroom to shop floor – note that this may require occasional site travel
Develop relationships and understanding of both existing and new clients and develop understanding of their needs and drivers.
Maintain client relationships that are aimed at satisfied customers and repeat business
Identify where Stantec can be of value to clients and particularly where Stantec can offer a unique value proposition.
Promote Brand
Develop understanding and promote with relevant electrical utilities, industry associations, academic institutions and training programs
Develop thorough understanding of Stantec’s differentiators and be able to explain benefits to clients
Your Capabilities and Credentials:
Engineer with a degree in civil engineering from an accredited university. Post graduate degree in engineering or business would be an asset.
Professional designation obtained in at least one Canadian Province (P.Eng.)
Minimum of 10 years’ experience with hydroelectric facilities preferably within a consulting engineering or utility environment
Knowledge of a variety of software programs used in engineering analysis and design; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Project management experience with demonstrated organizational and communication skills on small to medium multi-disciplinary projects.
Position will be flexible with working from home and/or office attendance in Dartmouth (NS). Affiliation with one of our other Atlantic offices in Fredericton (NB), Moncton (NB) or St. John’s (NL) would be an alternative. Occasional travel to client sites will be required.
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
