Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Project Engineering Manager to lead Thermal Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) projects. This role combines technical expertise with high-level project management, focusing on leading multi-disciplinary teams to ensure safe, timely, and cost-effective execution of complex heavy oil extraction projects. You will oversee all phases—from initial design through commissioning and operational support—while coordinating multidisciplinary teams.

Experience in Thermal in-situ SAGD facilities, heavy oil processing, and/or mineable oil sands is required. This position reports to the Business Center Practice Leader (Engineering Director).

Your Key Responsibilities

An Engineering Manager’s responsibilities are extensive, encompassing technical leadership, project controls, and stakeholder management, including but not limited to the following:

  • Manage engineering and design for SAGD facilities, heavy oil processing, and/or mineable oil sands projects, covering conceptual design, feasibility studies, FEED, and detailed engineering across multiple disciplines (Process, Mechanical, Piping, Civil, Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation & Control).

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and designers, primarily providing technical expertise as well as guidance and mentorship to ensure project design objectives are met, and also the deliverables meet client requirements, industry codes, and standards (e.g., APEGA, ABSA regulations in Alberta).

  • Approve and sign off on engineering and design deliverables.

  • Collaborate with the Engineering Director and Functional Managers (Process / Mechanical Piping / Civil / Structural / Electrical / Instrumentation and Controls) to achieve technical and schedule objectives.

  • Develop and manage project plans, scopes, schedules, and budgets; oversee execution of engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.

  • Engage with clients to define requirements and deliver tailored solutions that meet or exceed their expectations.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, industry codes, and company policies, emphasizing health, safety, and environmental stewardship.

  • Promote continuous improvement, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the team.

  • Identify, analyze, and mitigate project risks. Conduct risk assessment and design review sessions, PHAs (HAZIDs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, and other critical safety reviews) to address potential hazards.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Extensive experience in engineering design for SAGD facilities, heavy oil processing, and/or mineable oil sands within an EPC environment.

  • Strong technical expertise in Thermal in-situ SAGD facilities, Heavy oil processing, and/or mineable oil sands principles, technologies, and equipment.

  • Proven ability to manage complex projects from concept to completion, ensuring safety, quality, and client satisfaction.

  • Proven track record of successfully managing complex engineering projects from concept to completion, with a focus on safety, technical quality, and client satisfaction.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively manage teams and collaborate with clients and stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies, with a strong emphasis on planning, scheduling, and budgeting.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of design guidelines (API standards, AER directives, etc.), industry standards, and best practices.

  • Commitment to professional development and staying abreast of industry trends and advancements.

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent, preferably Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

  • 15-20 years in Engineering Management with minimum 10 years’ experience as an Engineering Manager in large-scale Thermal / Oil Sands projects,

  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and regulatory requirements for facility projects, with an EPC background.

  • Registration with APEGA as a P.Eng. is required, registration in other jurisdictions is an asset.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
