Your Opportunity

Stantec's Water Engineering Team is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to assist and support our soils and rock lab in Lexington, KY. You will support the day-to-day operations of an engineering laboratory, which involves a mix of technical, managerial, and administrative duties. In addition, you will serve as a Geotechnical Engineer in support of transportation, dam, power, and infrastructure projects that may include calculations, field work, coordination of simple tasks, and meeting attendance and recording. In general, with this geotechnical engineering role you will assist more senior engineers/designers by performing the routine aspects of geotechnical and civil engineering assignments. It is expected the mix between Geotechnical Engineering and laboratory responsibilities would be 50-50 mix.

Responsibilities include managing lab staff, ensuring equipment is maintained and calibrated, overseeing inventory and procurement, maintaining safety protocols, and coordinating with engineering teams on projects and resource allocation.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of an engineering laboratory, which involves a mix of technical, managerial, and administrative duties.

  • Managing lab staff, ensuring equipment is maintained and calibrated, overseeing inventory and procurement, maintaining safety protocols, and coordinating with engineering teams on projects and resource allocation.

  • Support project execution including scoping laboratory testing, execution of testing, and preparation of deliverables.

  • Manage laboratory testing project.

  • In this role you will have the opportunity to work with engineers and other technicians performing laboratory work including testing of soils, rock, aggregate, concrete and asphalt.

  • Lead a team performing advanced laboratory testing on soil, rock and concrete

  • Communicate with project managers and engineers regarding scope of services and schedule.

  • Support maintenance, calibration, purchase, and certification of equipment.

  • Maintain laboratory certifications for CCRL and AMRL.

  • Hiring, mentoring, coaching, and training of technical staff as required.

  • Perform quality control reviews of laboratory testing and reporting.

  • Innovation of laboratory procedures and digital data collection processes.

  • Evaluate laboratory testing rates and maintain laboratory financials.

  • Promote safe work practices for laboratory activities.

  • Support other civil and geotechnical engineering projects in a technical or management capacity as appropriate. Assists in planning and coordinating geotechnical field investigations.

  • May perform limited field work related to geotechnical explorations and/or construction related activities (although field work would become more limited based on years of experience).

  • Reviews boring logs and laboratory data.

  • Conducts basic calculations and performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned and under the supervision of a project engineer.

  • Assists in executing detailed analysis and evaluation of geotechnical hazards under the supervision of a project engineer, as it relates to the design and construction phases of the project.

  • Assists team in preparing designs, drawings, specifications, presentations, and reports.

  • Assists in supporting our multi-discipline teams in providing services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information and contract document clarifications.

  • Knowledge of soil, concrete and testing methods

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities.

  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong focus on Health and Safety.

Education and Experience

• Minimum 5 years’ experience with laboratory soil, concrete, and rock testing methods.

• Bachelor's degree in engineering.

• Kentucky PE
