Your Opportunity

An opportunity exists in our Markham, Mississauga or Toronto offices for a Senior Water Resources Engineer / Water Resources Project Manager. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for the management and coordination of stormwater management designs for projects ranging from commercial or residential infill developments to master stormwater drainage plans such Subwatershed Impact Studies with, as well as providing support in pursuing business development activities. You will be the prime contact on your projects with the client, approval agencies and others and you will use your technical and leadership abilities to lead a project team of designers and others.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • You will use your technical abilities, with support from senior staff, to lead and/or complete the surface water resources component(s) of a wide variety of projects in a dynamic design team setting. Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Guide the stormwater management design for a wide range of projects across all stages, from due diligence/feasibility and preliminary/conceptual design through to detailed design as well as providing support during scheduling, tendering and construction;

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary team members to ensure project requirements are delivered efficiently, accurately, and on schedule. This includes collaborating with and providing technical guidance to planners, landscape architects, environmental specialists, civil designers, project managers, and external consultants through active involvement in the execution of projects;

  • Analyze project requirements and develop clear, defensible design criteria for Subwatershed Impact Studies, Environmental Assessments, linear infrastructure, and major development projects;

  • Lead the development and/or revision of hydrologic and hydraulic models including, but not limited to, Visual OTTHYMO, HEC‑RAS , PCSWMM, and CulvertMaster, by selecting appropriate methodologies, applying sound modelling assumptions and establishing defensible modelling parameters;

  • Oversee floodplain delineation/flood hazard mapping, as well as evaluating the performance of hydraulic structures (culverts, bridges, channels) and proposing alternative sizing or design solutions to meet regulatory and stakeholder requirements;

  • Complete engineering design of stormwater management systems, including stormwater facilities, underground and surface drainage infrastructure, low impact development measures, linear infrastructure stormwater management and conveyance systems, and erosion and sediment control plans;

  • Prepare technical reports and design briefs that clearly document analyses, ensuring high-quality written, technical and graphic work. This includes technical and communication review and sealing of engineering design drawings and reports, where applicable;

  • Mentor and train junior and intermediate surface water staff on technical calculations, modeling, and report writing;

  • Conduct senior-level technical reviews of hydrologic/hydraulic models, engineering designs, and reports created by junior/intermediate engineers;

  • Ensure all deliverables comply with municipal, provincial, and federal guidelines, as well as industry best practices;

  • Liaise with clients, municipalities, conservation authorities, regulatory agencies, utilities. and others to obtain approvals;

  • Interface with clients on design details and support senior project managers to ensure that clients’ needs are met while maintaining strong relationships and high-quality service;

  • Manage surface water related tasks, ensuring completion of work on-time and on-budget;

  • Contribute to project proposals and budgets;

  • This position includes exposure to a variety of projects and sectors, so experience with different sectors and clients would be considered an asset. Career growth opportunities stemming from the position include the potential for a leadership role locally and/or corporately.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas to others both verbally and in written documentation such as emails, memos and technical reports with the ability to coordinate with clients and review agencies;

  • Extensive knowledge of Ontario’s stormwater guidelines and regulations and familiarity with the land development/redevelopment process with an understanding of water resources, environmental and/or civil engineering concepts. Strong working knowledge with residential subdivisions is considered an asset;

  • A background in the preparation of stormwater management plans and reports, master and/or phased master drainage plans and functional servicing plans and/or significant experience on the design of water resources infrastructure in support of linear infrastructure projects;

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas to others both verbally and in written documentation such as emails, memos and technical reports;

  • Capability of overseeing projects from design to completion;

  • Business development, strong leadership, time management, communication and team building skills are essential for you to meet the expectations of this challenging position;

  • Self-motivated individual possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and are able to prioritize multiple tasks;

  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated ability to manage projects and clients is essential; and

  • Hands on experience with stormwater management modelling, ideally Visual OTTHYMO, HEC-RAS, and PCSWMM. Knowledge of SWMHYMO, InfoWorks, GAWSER, or other models considered an asset. Experience with software such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD (Civil3D) is preferred. Requires proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering (or similar) and registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

  • Minimum of 12 years of stormwater management engineering experience with a preference for 15+ years with land development engineering and/or linear infrastructure design experience.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range:

• Locations in GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$114,600.00 - $164,600.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
