tantec is seeking a qualified, energetic, self-motivated, and resourceful Environmental Scientist / Environmental Planner to support our Environmental Services group. Grow your career with a leading environmental consulting firm serving a wide variety of private, federal, state, and local government clients in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, and the surrounding region.
Your role will be to provide technical support on a variety of ecosystem projects (stream to wetland focused projects), performing technical feasibility studies, analysis, conduct field work (including monitoring inspections and/or construction inspections), and supporting our environmental services related teams.
Your role is to work with general supervision and direction, independently, and as a team member on environmental services related projects.
You will prepare assessments, studies, sketches, memos/reports, coordinate with internal and external team members, and assemble data for the project engineer, project manager and/or end client.
This position will be part of Stantec’s Environmental Services team that provides the full range of expertise needed to address a variety of permitting and approval requirements. Our staff members have established excellent reputation implementing all facets of ecosystem projects.
Key Responsibilities
Perform field work, including exposure to inclement weather, in support of environmental and ecosystem restoration projects.
Prepare field sketches and compile technical data for Project Engineers, Project Managers, and project teams.
Collect field data for stream and environmental assessments, including stream assessments, perennial flow determinations, site visits, and related evaluations.
Prepare standard and technical documentation associated with stream restoration and mitigation monitoring, including annual monitoring reports, feasibility assessments, and site visit memoranda.
Assist Project Managers with management of environmental projects, including tracking schedules, assignments, and project data.
Support preparation of technical reports and assist with client and regulatory agency deliverables.
Assist with review of project time and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
Maintain QA/QC procedures and ensure compliance with documentation requirements.
Prepare, organize, and manage project files, including correspondence, reports, photographs, and supporting materials.
Track processing and distribution of incoming and outgoing project documents.
Draft technical reports and professional correspondence.
Assist with setup, organization, and closeout of project documentation and files.
Work effectively in both team‑based and independent environments.
Perform other related duties of a similar nature and level as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or a related field.
Knowledge of basic geomorphology, stormwater systems, and related environmental or construction principles.
Strong field skills, including the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and navigate difficult terrain using aerial maps.
Willingness to travel, including overnight and potentially multi‑week field assignments.
Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Ability to lift, carry, and transport field equipment safely.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong technical writing, note‑taking, and documentation skills with attention to detail.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with clients, project teams, and stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, manage multiple tasks, and adapt in a dynamic work environment.
Strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills, using sound professional judgment and consideration for safety.
Strong work ethic with a proactive, self‑motivated approach and ability to function as a team player.
Interest in ecosystems, natural resource conservation/restoration, and outdoor work.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD for review, markup, and preparation of basic figures and plans.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience or familiarity with stream or stormwater construction methods, materials, standards, and terminology.
Prior experience with environmental consulting, including coordination with clients or regulatory agencies.
Familiarity with GPS data collection, field inspection tools, and environmental data management.
Experience working across a range of ecological communities and with environmental regulatory compliance.
Basic skills in design, construction plan preparation, math, drawings, and applied science.
Ability to solve complex problems using creativity and innovation beyond standard approaches.
Ability to use AutoCAD or Civil 3D to prepare and modify basic plans, exhibits, and technical figures in support of environmental projects.
Education and Experience
Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience, preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Landscape Architecture, Engineering or related field.
Additional certifications are a benefit but not required:
VA DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Level.
VA DEQ Stormwater Management Inspector Level

Pay Range:
• Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ Areas-$54,000.00 - $75,600.00 Annually
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
