Your Opportunity
The role of a BIM Technician is to perform basic structural BIM drafting and modeling tasks under close supervision. You will work as part of project teams on structural building projects, learning to apply your skills to real-world challenges. This entry-level position is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate with a technical diploma or associate’s degree to launch a career in Building Information Modeling (BIM) for structural engineering. You will join a dynamic team that balances creativity and efficiency on challenging projects, all while receiving mentorship and guidance from experienced team members. Together, we’ll create a foundation for your professional growth, helping you develop foundational technical skills in structural BIM and positioning you for future success. You will contribute to real structural design projects that prioritize safety, performance, and sustainability, gaining hands-on experience in a collaborative environment. This role emphasizes career development – we offer training opportunities, supportive colleagues, and a culture of continuous learning so you can build your capabilities and redefine your personal best.
Key responsibilities include (under guidance of senior staff):
Your Key Responsibilities
BIM Model Development: Assist in setting up new Revit structural models from approved templates and help maintain the project file structure according to established standards.
Drafting and Documentation: Work with project teams to prepare structural drawing documentation and deliverables, such as plans, sections, and details, following instructions and company standards.
Revit Modeling: Use Revit Structure to input and modify structural elements in 3D models, ensuring accurate placement and geometry of steel and concrete components under supervision. Maintain model organization (views, levels, sheets) as directed.
Digital File Management: Create and update electronic drawing files in compliance with project and client requirements, with all work reviewed for accuracy. Ensure file naming conventions and storage protocols are followed.
Markups and Revisions: Convert design markups or redlines into model or draw updates with attention to detail. Double-check your work and incorporate feedback to produce error-free, document-ready outputs.
Drawing Sets and Printing: Under direction, assist in publishing, plotting, and organizing drawing sets. This includes printing PDFs, exporting models, and assembling deliverable packages as required. Support the team in maintaining revision logs and sheet consistency across the set.
Model Quality & Standards: Learn and apply basic model health practices – for example, avoid introducing unnecessary warnings in the Revit model and follow prescribed work sharing and BIM execution plan (BEP) protocols. With guidance, help monitor model performance and adherence to project standards.
Interdisciplinary Coordination: Support coordination by sharing structural models with other disciplines (architectural, MEP, etc.) via collaboration platforms. Observe clash detection results when directed and assist in resolving minor coordination issues (e.g. adjusting elements after conflicts are identified) under close guidance. Communicate any modeling constraints or quality concerns promptly to the BIM Coordinator or BIM Lead.
Meetings and Collaboration: Attend BIM team meetings and discipline coordination meetings as requested. Come prepared to learn from discussions about project schedules, design changes, and coordination issues. Take notes and follow up on assigned action items.
Learning and Development: Proactively engage in training sessions, workshops, and mentoring opportunities to increase your technical knowledge and BIM skills. You will be expected to ask questions, seek feedback, and continuously improve. Participate in office and firm-wide initiatives (such as innovation projects or volunteer tasks) to broaden your experience and contribute to team and company goals.
(All work will be reviewed by more senior staff to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards, as is typical for this career level.)
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Revit Knowledge: Familiarity with Autodesk Revit (ideally Revit Structure) and its application in building design. Coursework or internship experience using Revit for structural modeling is highly valued. A basic proficiency with Revit and a willingness to learn advanced features is expected, with senior support.
BIM Fundamentals: Basic understanding of Building Information Modeling concepts and drafting/modeling processes. Knowledge of how BIM is used in the AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) industry and eagerness to expand that knowledge on the job.
Standards & Content: Familiarity with using standard structural families, templates, and libraries within Revit. Able to follow established content standards for structural elements and seek guidance when something isn’t defined. You will be expected to flag any issues or gaps in the content to the BIM Coordinator/Lead for resolution.
Collaboration Tools: Awareness of or exposure to common BIM collaboration platforms. For example, an introductory knowledge of Autodesk Construction Cloud (BIM 360 / ACC) is a plus. You should be willing to learn how to use these tools to access, share, and markup models and documents in a controlled environment following team workflows.
Coordination & Clash Detection: Basic awareness of what clash detection and model coordination entail in a multidisciplinary project. Willingness to learn tools like Navisworks for viewing federated models is expected. You should be able to review simple coordination issues when guided by experienced staff and help in resolving clashes assigned to you by following instructions.
Computational Tools: An interest in automation and efficiency using digital tools. For instance, familiarity with Dynamo (visual scripting for Revit) or similar tools from school is an asset. At minimum, you should be able to run simple pre-defined scripts under supervision and communicate if outcomes deviate from expectations.
Attention to Detail: A client-focused, can-do attitude with strong attention to detail, especially in following instructions and standards. Able to manage time across multiple tasks and priorities as assigned. You take pride in producing quality work and are conscientious about checking your own work before submission.
Communication Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills. You ask questions when unclear on instructions and can interpret redlines and feedback effectively. Being a team player is essential – you will collaborate with designers, engineers, and other BIM technicians, so the ability to communicate and work well in a team environment is crucial. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is expected for daily tasks like documentation and collaboration.
Education and Experience
Credentials: An associate’s degree or technical diploma/certificate in a related program (e.g., architectural technology, engineering design, drafting, or a similar field).
Experience: This is an early-career position designed for individuals with little to no prior professional experience beyond internships. Relevant experience in BIM drafting/modeling or construction technology is preferred. Relevant co-op or internship experience in structural engineering or BIM production is highly beneficial and will be considered.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. For example, if you have additional years of related experience or other educational credentials, we will evaluate those in lieu of the above requirements. The key requirement is a foundation in structural drafting/modeling principles and software, coupled with a strong desire to learn and grow in a BIM career. (Any experience with structural projects in an academic or internship setting is a plus.)
