A role in HQ Facilities Engineering and Asset Management means being at the heart of our perpetual reimagining. This group is the think tank and laboratory for the innovative ideas that spark change throughout the Supply Chain. We are inventors, engineers, metrics masters, data geeks, testers, triers, course-correctors and askers of the all-important question “What if …?”. This team influences processes, engineers the robotics and automation to support those processes, activates solutions sustainably across the network and manages those assets. Your specific expertise—whether it’s people, process, technology, or data—will be felt well beyond the boundaries of the Supply Chain organization, positively impacting Target team members and guests alike.
As a Senior Equipment Engineer on the Engineering and Automation Systems Team, you will play a key role in supporting Target’s global supply chain network of 60+ distribution, fulfillment, food & beverage, and omni-channel facilities by effectively managing assets across the enterprise. In this role, you will analyze, recommend, and drive continuous improvement efforts to elevate availability and longevity of material handling equipment while working toward reducing total cost of ownership. You will serve as the enterprise-engineering SME for equipment and systems spanning multiple distribution facilities. You will be responsible for developing the technical obsolescence remediation and modernization strategy, in partnership with lead equipment engineers, that informs long-range capital plans being developed by asset managers. You will plan and drive technical projects to improve safety, throughput rates, maintenance capability and efficiency while simultaneously addressing spare parts obsolescence. This role is at the forefront of defining appropriate equipment lifecycle intervals while dictating the engineering standards that inform replacement criteria. This role will be closely tied to field operations, field engineering and HQ project teams to understand problems, provide technical consultation, evaluate solutions and promote the implementation of safe and reliable material handling equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and prioritize improvements to material handling equipment and processes by analyzing production and equipment data.
- Visit remote sites as needed to observe, analyze, teach, and recommend changes to equipment maintenance, usage, or operational processes that improve the safety, reliability, and performance of the equipment.
- Maintain technical subject-matter expertise for a defined subset of Target’s material handling systems and equipment. Manage and establish criteria and reporting within enterprise asset management systems.
- Work comprehensively within the Enterprise Asset Management system to review technical equipment data, analyze trends, and recommend updates.
- Technical assessment and system analysis of owned equipment portfolio to recommend lifecycle roadmap for automated system subcomponents.
- Support asset management team by providing technical input to business case documentation that informs on ROI, total cost of ownership and risk mitigation.
- Provide technical insight to support the creation of field annual operational expense budgets for maintenance labor and spare parts associated with owned subset of equipment portfolio.
- Support field teams with vendor partnerships that allow for automated solutions to opportunities identified by the field engineering team during annual material handling inspections.
- Drive project work in partnership with field and activation to implement small, medium and large improvements associated with your owned equipment portfolio.
- Present and tailor key technical concepts and ideas to a variety of audiences, including technical subject matter experts and non-technical business leaders.
- Apply structured problem-solving techniques to define problems, analyze information collected, and develop solutions.

About you:
- Four-year degree in engineering or a four-year degree and equivalent experience
- Two or more years of engineering, logistics, supply chain, or facilities management experience
- Experience and knowledge of various equipment in current day Supply Chain buildings
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation
- Ability to effectively use and develop reports to analyze and present data
- Ability to effectively collaborate with and influence numerous internal and external partners
- High level of technical curiosity and a desire/willingness/ability to continuously develop and enhance technical acumen.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly proficient in independent problem solving, creating plans, and delivering results
- Ability to multi-task a wide variety of requests and tasks, confidently shifting and reprioritizing work based on effort, risk, impact, and customer needs
- Poise and confidence in challenging situations
- Ability to listen to diverse agendas and negotiate win-win solutions that drive long-term business value for Target
- Ability to use technical knowledge to develop and propose specific solutions to problems

- Ability to travel, potentially on short notice, up to 15% of the time
Preferred Qualifications & Experiences
- Direct experience maintaining or sustaining material handling equipment and control systems within a live production environment
- Experience with MAXIMO or comparable Enterprise Asset Management System.
- Experience with testing and commissioning material handling equipment and control systems
- Multi-disciplined technical acumen with automated systems (mechanical/electrical/controls)
- Project management experience and / or certification
