Renewables Electrical Senior Engineer

The Opportunity
Ulteig, and its affiliated companies, are hiring for a Renewables Electrical Senior Engineer. In this role, you will act as a project leader on battery energy storage systems (BESS) and wind projects. You will serve as a technical leader, applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to complex renewable energy projects. This position is designated as an individual contributor role, with no direct supervisory responsibilities. However, you will collaborate extensively with Lead and Senior Engineers across the department to achieve organizational objectives. This role will be a strategic contributor to the growth of our Renewables Lifeline Sector®.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and review electrical designs for wind and battery energy storage projects, including one-line diagrams, grounding, protection schemes, and cable sizing.
- Serve as the technical lead on projects, coordinating with internal teams, external partners, and clients to ensure technical excellence and project success.
- Perform electrical studies such as cable ampacity, energy loss, short-circuit analysis, protection coordination, and grounding analysis.
- Prepare technical specifications for electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, inverters, and batteries.
- Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, including field inspections and troubleshooting.
- Conduct technical reviews and enforce quality control to maintain high standards in design and implementation.
- Provide technical guidance during construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting to ensure the design intent is achieved in the field.
- Research new technologies and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance project performance and efficiency.
- Ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NEC, IEEE, NFPA, NESC).
- Participate in client meetings, present technical information clearly, and support proposal development with technical input.
- Additional duties may include tasks beyond what is listed, such as special projects, assisting colleagues, or new initiatives. A willingness to adapt to changing priorities and support team efforts enhances collaboration and growth opportunities.
What We Expect from You
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering required. ABET ABET-accredited program or equivalent is required
- CFIA license is a must (or similar PE or P.Eng) with proven 12 years in electrical project design.
- 15+ years of experience preferred in renewable energy, power systems, or a related industry.
- Experience with engineering software such as ETAP, Easypower, PSCAD, CYME, AutoCAD, or similar.
- Experience leading projects and teams.
- Strong knowledge of wind energy systems and battery energy storage systems, and technologies.
- Ability to perform AC & DC studies using electrical modelling software. Proficiency with electrical modeling software (e.g., ETAP, Easypower, CYME, CDEGS, or similar).
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and industry standards is required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
- Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- This role requires exceptional organizational and strategic prioritization skills to manage a broad project portfolio.
- Must be analytical and self-motivated.
- Must have authorization to work legally in Costa Rica for any employer.
