The Opportunity
Ulteig is seeking a Lead Roadway Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of transportation projects across Colorado, supporting CDOT and local agency clients. This individual will lead roadway design efforts within multi-discipline teams, taking ownership of design execution from concept development through PS&E and construction support. The selected candidate will serve as a roadway task lead, combining hands-on production with team leadership, mentorship of junior staff, and coordination with clients and project managers. This role is ideal for an engineer ready to expand into project management while contributing to client growth and future pursuits. The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

What You'll Do
- Lead roadway design execution for transportation projects, coordinating closely with project managers, clients, and multi-discipline teams.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Review designs for high quality, support engineers through challenging problem-solving, and drive standards across the department.
- Support team and department initiatives focused on improving design workflows, tools, and delivery efficiency.
- Work closely with clients to understand their technical needs and identify the best feasible solutions.
- Apply current, standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to complete engineering tasks, supporting other civil design workflows as necessary.
- Apply sound engineering judgment to evaluate design options and recommend practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Maintain a value engineering mindset throughout the development, design, and construction phases.
- Develop comprehensive plans, specifications, and observation reports that are accurate and in accordance with sound engineering practices.
- Recommend alterations to development criteria and design features to improve quality and project outcomes.
- Review plans and specifications for constructability, safety, and risk management considerations.
- Lead QA/QC efforts for roadway design tasks to ensure accurate, complete, and review-ready submittals.
- Prepare detailed reports and correspondence concerning the direction and progress of assigned projects.
- Collaborate closely with business and engineering staff across multiple markets and technical disciplines.
- Support marketing, sales, and business development activities within the assigned market.
What We Expect from You
- B.S. in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent is required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is required; Colorado licensure preferred or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe. NCEES Council Record is a plus.
- 6–10+ years of civil engineering experience preferred, including 4–5+ years in roadway design.
- Demonstrated experience leading roadway design tasks and contributing to multi-discipline project delivery.
- Lead roadway design efforts within project teams; assign work, coordinate tasks, and ensure quality and accountability
- Mentor and develop junior staff through design reviews, day-to-day guidance, and task-level coaching
- Drive coordination across disciplines (drainage, traffic, structures, utilities)
- Serve as roadway design lead for PS&E deliverables, responsible for quality, completeness, and coordination under the direction of project leadership
- Actively contribute to design production, including model development, plan preparation, and quantity development
- Strong in geometric design, grading, phasing, and constructability
- Prepare and review alignments, quantities, and cost estimates
- Strong proficiency in Bentley OpenRoads Designer, including corridor modeling, plan production, and supporting team production workflows
- Experience delivering CDOT projects; understands standards, specifications, and workflows
- Familiar with CDOT design manuals and stakeholder coordination
- Manage multiple assignments; meet schedule and quality expectations
- Proactively identify risks (ROW, utilities, scope gaps) and drive resolution
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to clients and teams
- Demonstrate readiness to support project management responsibilities, including scope development, schedule coordination, and client interaction
- Participate in client coordination and support proposals/business development
- Experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
- Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
- Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.

Target Base Compensation Range for this role is $111,200 - $150,400
