The Opportunity
Ulteig and its affiliated companies are hiring for a Renewables Substation Engineering Supervisor in Costa Rica. This role is responsible for leading a subset of the Renewable Substation design team while fostering on-the-job leadership development, supporting continued team growth, and delivering high-quality electrical substation solutions for renewable energy projects.
The Engineering Supervisor is a self-starting technical leader with strong leadership, communication, resource management, and project execution capabilities. This role works closely with technical managers and cross-functional business partners to maintain quality, responsiveness, schedule awareness, and alignment with internal and external client expectations.

What You’ll Do
Project Technical Lead 70%
- Manage and lead engineering activities related to electrical substations during proposal, design, and construction stages.
- Provide project oversight by managing engineering scope according to technical contracts, supporting change orders, and maintaining project schedules.
- Oversee design activities and review drawings, calculations, specifications, and engineering packages.
- Maintain high levels of quality and responsiveness to meet internal and external client requirements.
- Maintain project resourcing visibility and support billable work planning to ensure appropriate workload alignment and project delivery.
Management Responsibilities 20%
- Provide strategic direction, leadership, coaching, and technical services oversight to help employees achieve individual, team, department, and organizational goals.
- Coach, train, and develop technical engineering staff.
- Facilitate weekly team meetings, bi-weekly at minimum, and actively manage team resource planning.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, quarterly and annual performance reviews, training conversations, and professional development discussions.
- Plan workload for direct reports and collaborate with other leaders on broader resource planning.
- Support the hiring process, including interviewing, onboarding, and related recruiting efforts.
- Support employee engagement and retention efforts.
- Monitor and support key success indicators, including safety, client satisfaction, financial growth and profitability measures, utilization, multiplier, and revenue factor.
- Support and consult with the Technical Manager on talent planning, employee concerns, performance discussions, and escalation needs.
Business Development Responsibilities 10%
- Partner with Sales and engineers across the organization to support revenue growth and expansion of services with existing and prospective clients.
- Support proposal efforts by developing input, providing resource insight, and reviewing proposal materials with Proposal Development, Project Management, and other departments.
- Build, develop, and maintain client relationships through regular engagement with key clients and stakeholders.
- Additional duties may include tasks beyond what is listed, such as special projects, assisting colleagues, or new initiatives. A willingness to adapt to changing priorities and support team efforts enhances collaboration and growth opportunities.
What We Expect from You
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent, is required.
- CFIA or equivalent professional registration is a plus; ability to obtain licensure within one year is preferred. U.S. Professional Engineer (PE) registration is a plus.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) is required.
- Prior experience in electrical design is required. Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience in the design and construction of power or renewable energy projects, with an emphasis on electrical substations, is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of, or familiarity with, LV/MV/HV electrical substation equipment.
- Ability to review and produce design drawings, including general arrangements, elevations, cable and conduit plans, grounding plans, physical connection details, AC/DC schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to perform AC and DC substation studies.
- Ability to develop protection and control design deliverables, including protective relays, panel arrangements, one-line and single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, relay panel wiring, and equipment wiring for substation design.
- Ability to develop physical design deliverables, including yard layout plans, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems for substation design.
- Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
- Proven experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, plus additional software knowledge depending on specialty.
- Knowledge of utility service design guides is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, public agencies, clients, and external partners.
- High level of initiative and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with clear expectations and timeliness.
- Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a hybrid mode schedule; 3 days in the office, 2 days from home.
- Must possess strong verbal and written English communication skills (CEFR level B2–C1). You should be comfortable articulating complex ideas and collaborating effectively within a global professional environment.
- Must have authorization to work legally in Costa Rica for any employer.
