Job overview and responsibilities

The Senior Manager of APAC Communications will oversee public relations efforts for United in the APAC region, overseeing several country-based public relations agencies. Under the guidance of the International PR Director, this person will work to secure earned media coverage of the airline’s priority routes/destinations and customer-facing investments, and act as United’s spokesperson in the APAC region. This person will work closely with the local sales, marketing and airport operations teams to provide PR support for regional marketing priorities, will provide executive communications counsel to local leadership and will prioritize the team’s work to align with the communications activities happening in Chicago and globally.

  • Lead external communications for the APAC region, coordinating with country-based agencies and consultants to secure media interviews for executive leadership, promote priority routes/destinations and elevate brand awareness of United locally.
  • Oversee the work of country-based public relations agencies in APAC, prioritizing their projects to align with business priorities, strategically managing their budgets and establishing new agency relationships as needed.
  • Act as the primary point of contact between APAC-based reporters and United, addressing reactive requests in a timely and professional manner, regularly seeking/seizing opportunities to secure proactive earned media coverage and maintaining a personal network of influential local reporter contacts.
  • Coordinate with the U.S.-based Consumer and Corporate/Global Response communications teams to promote company news/announcements globally.
  • Partner closely with the APAC-based sales and marketing teams to provide PR support for local marketing efforts.

This position is offered on local terms and conditions. Expatriate assignments and sponsorship for employment visas, even on a time-limited visa status, will not be awarded.

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in Public Relations, Corporate Communications, or related field
  • Experience working in APAC markets, especially Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong

  • Established relationships with top-tier travel and aviation reporters in Australia

  • Experience preparing officer-level and above executives for interactions with global media, including anticipating reporter questions, drafting speeches/talking points, and staffing interviews

  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure at a high level and deal with complex issues

  • Ability to prioritize/plan and execute using good business judgment in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and executive presence

  • Proactive mindset; leads by example to seek and seize opportunities to secure earned media coverage for United

  • Extraordinary attention to detail and ability to execute projects at a high caliber to completion

  • Ability to travel up to 30% in the APAC region and to the U.S.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Australia for any employer without sponsorship
  • Must be fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Successful completion of the interview is required to meet the job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of the airline industry, with in-house or agency experience working for a global or internationally based airline
