The Director of Healthcare Analytics is a member of the Advanced Analytics and Clinical Insights (AACI) team within Optum Insight that provides analytic solutions for healthcare payers and providers. In this leadership role, you will manage a diverse team of data scientists, product solutions analysts, and data analysts who develop and support healthcare analytic software including the Symmetry and Impact product suite and development of a new value-based care software as a service solution. Team members reporting to the Director will develop machine learning and traditional logistic regression models and other team roles develop business rules and perform analysis along with post-implementation phases of the software development life cycle. Ideal candidate will have experience with managing a team that performs data science functions (e.g. model development, Machine Learning Dev/Ops), data analysis and business analysis functions (e.g. requirements solution development, product SME, data manipulation), as well as experience leading process optimization and team leadership across the software development lifecycle.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Build global data science and methodology team; including hiring and leading requisition justification process
- Oversight of data science and analytics tea projects from inception to completion. Work closely with project stakeholders to collaborate across multiple business needs
- Oversight of project goals, deliverables, and timelines
- Allocate resources and monitor project progress
- Mitigate risks to ensure on-time and within-budget delivery
- Responsible for developing a high-performing team of data scientists, data analysts, product solutions analysts and other data professionals
- Hire top talent, provide ongoing training and development opportunities, and foster a collaborative team culture
- Drive strategic decision-making and ensure data quality and integrity
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear and concise language that can be easily understood by both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with data regulations and establish processes and procedures to protect sensitive data, ensuring that it is securely stored, accessed, and transmitted
- Stay up to date with the latest data protection laws and regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
- Ensure projects are executed using best practices and industry standards
- Provide guidance and support to team members, fostering a collaborative and productive project environment
- Push complex projects forward via solid communication and project oversight
- Ensure frictionless hand-offs by creating clear and comprehensive documentation of methods, logic, and process steps
- Ensure team performs quality checks on the analysis output for data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
- Provides leadership to and is accountable for the performance and direction through multiple layers of management and senior level professional staff
- Work most often impacts a large business unit, or multiple markets/sites

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor/Master’s degree in a health informatics, analytics, business management or related healthcare field with solid focus on methods analytics
- 8+ years of leadership/people management experience in a matrix environment
- 8+ years of experience in data science and/or business analysis, business process and/or business requirements documentation
- 3+ years of administrative claims data and medical coding systems (i.e. CPT, HCPCS, ICD-9/10, NDC)
- Experience with SDLC (System Development Life Cycle) methodologies
- Experience with statistical concepts and project management
- Experience with Git, Rally/Jira (or similar ticketing systems)
- Experience with owning complex projects from start to finish
- Solid background US (United States) healthcare system
- Proven business acumen and business domain knowledge in the healthcare industry
- Solid written and verbal communication skills addressing technical and non-technical audiences
- Solid presentation skills; able to effectively present complex information clearly across all audiences including senior level business leaders and stakeholders
- Proven superior analytical, creative, and problem-solving skills
- Proven excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills
- Solid interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus and influence team members
- Demonstrated experience with project and/or product management and lifecycles
- Working knowledge of clinical data domains
- Proven analytical, intellectually curious and a problem solver
- Proficiency with MS Office suite (including Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint)
- Deep knowledge of healthcare data via a large data warehouse environment, ideally large and supplied from multiple sources using either EMR or healthcare claims
- Familiarity with health care data quality assurance routines and expected outcomes, including an understanding of poor data quality and its impact on methods and analytics
Preferred Qualifications:
- 8+ UnitedHealth Group experience desired
- 8+ years working in a health care payer or provider setting
- Deep understanding of health care industry concepts (cost of care, health risk, quality of care, etc.)
- Familiarity with CMS and regulatory landscape
- Familiarity with analytic grouping methodologies, including Symmetry Suite (ETG, PEG, ERG, PRG) and SRE
