Software engineering is the application of engineering to the design, development, implementation, testing and maintenance of software in a systematic method. The roles in this function will cover all primary development activity across all technology functions that ensure we deliver code with high quality for our applications, products, and services and to understand customer needs and to develop product roadmaps.

These roles include, but are not limited to analysis, design, coding, engineering, testing, debugging, standards, methods, tools analysis, documentation, research and development, maintenance, new development, operations, and delivery. The Sr. Manager, Software Engineering serves as the technology leader working to ensure engineering operational excellence. The role is responsible for the overall operational excellence of the service area, consisting of 3-8 feature teams, to ensure we have high performing feature teams that are tacking the highest priority work and leveraging current development practices to delivery high quality features that align to the business needs. You will subscribe to principles of the LeSS agile framework in your leadership style. You will focus on execution as well as serve as a mentor in leading through digital and organizational transformation.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Engage with product and technology leaders to gain understanding of the business strategy, vision and priority
  • Lead multiple engineering/feature teams & drive operational excellence
  • Implement Agile software development and automation across all technology platforms
  • Identify gaps in skills In your Service Area and align those gaps to the upskilling curriculum, using influence to reprioritize as needed
  • Actively participate in all Service Area Events (Daily Scrum, Refinement, Sprint Review, Retrospectives)
  • Serve as a partner to the Service Area Product Owner (SAPO) and Agile Practitioner (AP) to improve our operational excellence, identify areas of opportunity as well as celebrate successes
  • Serve as technical co-owner-in partnership with other Service Area leaders-for the platforms, portals and systems that underlie our service areas
  • Partners with the SAPO, Lead Software Engineer (LSE) and teams when vulnerabilities, issues or remediation’s are required
  • Provides guidance to the teams during product refinement, analysis, solutioning, and delivery of the work.
  • Regular 1:1s with all team members in the Service Area from the Technology Organization
  • Provide meaningful feedback to the Talent Advocates (people managers)
  • Provide an excellent onboarding experience all new team members joining the service area to include: team alignment, applications, processes, and tools
  • Observe and update policies related to our Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Assists the AP and Feature teams in clearing large obstacles
  • Keep current with modern technologies and enterprise systems to maintain a wide body of knowledge; regularly teach concepts for colleagues
  • Serves as a mentor to colleagues in regard to developing strong business relationships and leading through organizational transformation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • History of success with application modernization and rationalization
  • Track record of leading through other leaders
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking abilities and an enterprise-wide perspective
  • Expertise in Agile and DevOps methodologies
  • Demonstrated track record of developing enterprise platforms and leading large scale/high transaction digital experiences
  • Proven expertise applying architecture and engineering practices to drive business value
  • Experience creating & owning business-enabling multiple technology roadmaps
  • Experience leading through influence in a complex, large, matrixed, global environment
  • History of executing with excellence: setting purposeful goals and achieving them through intelligent actions, which balancing competing priorities without losing momentum behind execution
  • Deep hands-on technical expertise in building web applications and RESTful web services
  • Fosters accountability, transparent communication, innovation and leading by example
  • Outstanding collaboration, strong influencing, problem solving and negotiation skills
  • Knowledge of networking and internet protocols
  • Knowledge of Encryption, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), understanding of OWASP

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field or equivalent 6+ years of experience
  • 4+ years of experience in leading multi-faceted development Teams
  • Experience with microservices architecture
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience leading in an Agile organization
  • Experience with building relationships with business leaders
  • Solid understanding of networking principles in Cloud environments
  • Understanding and application of Domain-Driven-Design and Event-Driven-Architecture
  • Understanding of SOLID architectural principals
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools
  • Solid knowledge of integration technologies, middleware, and protocols
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., .Net, Angular)
  • Familiarity with Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and messaging systems
  • U.S Citizenship
  • Ability to work Central or Mountain Time Zones
  • Ability to be on call 1 week per month

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Azure certifications
  • 2+ years of industry experience in full-stack development
  • Experience operating within a Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS) Framework
  • Government contracting experience
  • Experience with 3+ of the following:
    • Experience with Angular, React, or other JavaScript frameworks / libraries
    • Experience with application containerization, deployment, and orchestration across environments
    • Experience with CI/CD and test automation
    • Experience with building and deploying containers
    • Experience in deployment patterns including Blue/Green, Rolling, and Canary
    • Experience with MS SQL, PostgreSQL, or other similar relational database management
    • Experience with Web APIs and (REST) based communication
    • Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools, Terraform
    • Experience building cloud-native applications in Azure, AWS, or Google
    • Experience in automated configuration management tools such as Chef, Puppet, or Ansible
    • Experience with FedRAMP and NIST SP 800-53
    • Experience writing and testing Web parts, content types, event handlers, custom workflows, and site definitions

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $104,700 to $190,400 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
