A Data Engineering Consultant role specializes in designing and implementing data solutions for Business in OptumHealth Division of Optum. The role will be responsible for understanding and translating business requirements into scalable and efficient data architectures.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with clients to understand their business requirements and data needs
- Data Design and Management – Design and develop scalable and efficient data architectures, including data pipelines, data lakes, and data warehouses. Applies engineering principles to create databases that optimize the ability to extract, store and manipulate data for consumption by other applications
- Develops and implements scripts for maintenance, monitoring and performance tuning of database
- Understand data structures and common methods to transform data for further analysis
- Use modern tools and techniques
- Leverage modern technologies, e.g., AI/ML
- Design scalable Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) packages
- Engineering Principle – Designs, builds, tests and adapts solutions that optimize environment and meet evolving needs of customers and business, leveraging and anticipating modern technologies, e.g., AI/ML, to support the transition to fullstack proficiency
- Focus on customer and desired business outcomes in the design and build of solutions
- Continually seek out opportunities to automate solutions
- Write, debug, test and deploy code to create working solution
- Technology Acumen – Seeks out and applies the standards, concepts & functionality of all technology /systems within domain including the relationship and interdependencies between technologies
- Possess breadth of knowledge spanning all bodies of technologies, e.g., databases, middleware, OS, etc.
- Consider interdependencies of various technologies in analyses and solutions
- Research industry trends and impact on function/business
- Earns credibility and enables communication with employees
- Possess basic understanding of data science concepts and their use in solution
- Data Integration – Demonstrates ability to build business value focused solutions that enable actionable insights from data
- Find new avenues for data to be used
- Recommend ways to improve data efficiency
- Technology Security Standards – Understands and applies the protocols, procedures, processes and techniques to prevent the unauthorized access to and protection of systems and data and complies with applicable contractual, regulatory, statutory, and company policies
- Comply with enterprise security protocols
- Recognize applicable standards for data under own control
- Consider security implications in activities and designs
- Use approved security tools
- Work with stakeholders to define data governance and data management best practices
- Conduct data profiling and analysis to identify data quality issues and recommend solutions
- Optimize and tune data pipelines and queries for performance and scalability
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends in data engineering and analytics
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior data engineers and team members
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders, to ensure successful implementation of data solutions
- Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
- Ability to work in multiple platforms

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree is a plus)
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer or similar role, with a focus on designing and implementing data solutions with minimum 7+ years’ experience in Data Engineering
- Experience with cloud-based data technologies, such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform
- Experience with Agile development methodologies and project management tools, such as JIRA or Trello
- Solid expertise in data modeling, data integration, and ETL processes using Python & Snowflake
- Proficiency in SQL, and/or other programming languages commonly used in data engineering
- Solid problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex data issues
- Proven excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients and stakeholders
