The Institute combines faculty insights in energy markets and policy, climate systems engineering, and energy technology to produce world-changing ideas while also investing in the next generation of energy and climate thinkers, leaders, and innovators through novel educational programs.


Job Summary

The Student Engagement Administrator will assist with building and supporting a vibrant interdisciplinary student energy and climate community on campus. This work will include supporting the development of a strategy for fostering a unified campus community, helping to create and coordinate student-based programming, initiatives, and events, and assisting in providing career development opportunities for students. The Administrator will report to the Associate Director, Education Programs and Partnerships and will work under their guidance to complete tasks and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the coordination and support of an interdisciplinary climate and energy club to encourage student engagement. Helps organize regular student programming based on undergraduate and graduate student interests and ideas, including arranging guest speakers and coordinating off-campus excursions to energy-related educational destinations. Organizes an annual climate case competition with notable organizations for students to engage in real-world problem solving for modern day issues relating to climate and energy.
  • Supports the development of a student internship program aimed at connecting University of Chicago students with internship opportunities, including summer internships in Washington, DC, and other locations. Assists with building relationships with external energy and climate internship programs, managing a summer internship stipend program, and maintaining internship/fellowship databases and promotional materials. Connects students with internships and job opportunities during schooling and post-graduation.
  • Manages grants for student-led projects to improve campus sustainability and reduce emissions, including managing a cumulative symposium.
  • Organizes an annual international trip for students to attend the yearly UNFCCC Climate Conference of Parties including managing flights, hotels, and programming before, during, and after the trip. Coordinates with students to provide highlights of trip for Institute and broader University communications. Manages conference travel for other major conferences including CERAWeek, MIT Energy Conference, Boston Energy Conference, etc.
  • Collaborates with the director of alumni relations to support efforts to identify and engage alumni working in energy, climate, and environment fields as mentors for students. This includes assisting in organizing networking events, developing a shadow program, expanding internship opportunities, and maintaining a networking database for student access.
  • Provides support for the management of student fellowship programs, including promotion and recruitment, in coordination with administrative personnel. Assists in developing programming to supplement learning opportunities and build a fellowship community.
  • Manages summer internships with UChicago facilities to improve campus sustainability and assist in reaching the University’s greenhouse emission reduction goals. Manages the internship responsibilities, deliverables, and end-of-summer capstones.
  • Organizes a weekly lunch focused on interdisciplinary research presentations from young researchers.
  • Assists in building and maintaining relationships with student engagement professionals across campus and with on-campus energy/environment/climate groups.
  • Helps develop content for news stories highlighting student achievements, such as summer internships or other activities, as well as spotlighting alumni accomplishments.
  • Provides students with information about energy, environment, and climate-related educational initiatives, opportunities, and classes on campus, ensuring resources like the class database are updated and accessible.
  • Represents the climate/energy program at student activity fairs and relevant group meetings and events on campus. Provides support for Orientation Week activities.
  • Provides guidance and support for student-driven initiatives.
  • Helps promote climate/energy programming and pursues event and initiative partnerships with students. Collects feedback on ways to improve programs and services.
  • Provides general support for Institute events, especially in engaging a student audience and assisting with day-of organization.
  • Uses moderate/solid understanding and experience to administer the delivery of services to program participants and/or beneficiaries.
  • Analyzes program budgets and recommends or makes budgetary recommendations.
  • Has moderate/high levels of interactions with faculty, researchers and staff for committee work or information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or a related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • Working in a stakeholder engagement or program management role.
  • Working with students or early career professionals.
  • Building partnerships and initiatives and creating and managing events.
  • Background or interest in energy/environmental issues encouraged to apply.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), using web-based communication methods and tools such as MailChimp and WordPress or similar platforms.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, and work both independently with a high degree of initiative and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Work effectively with management, staff, researchers, students, and outside vendors and collaborators.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices for engaging young people, including through web, email and social media.
  • Strategic and creative thinking, project management and planning skills. Manage and prioritize responsibilities, perform effectively in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines in a timely manner while maintaining professionalism and product quality.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills, creativity, flexibility and attention to detail.
