Job Summary
The program manager's primary responsibility is to provide coverage for the six month period of the UMMNH Student Affairs Program Manager's leave and manage specific responsibilities of that position. The time period includes onboarding and a transition post return.
The Program Manager works with the Public Engagement & Operations department and collaborates with all UMMNH departments, student docents, UM faculty, and community partners to develop and implement educational programs that foster excitement about science, culture, and the natural world for K-12 students and public visitors; provide an educational experience for University student docents; engage University faculty and students; and showcase the collections and research at the University of Michigan.
Pay range: $25 - $28/hour
Responsibilities*
The Program Manager will assist with the development of, manage, and evaluate education programs for the Museum of Natural History, within the following areas:
Student Docent Program
The Program Manager will assist with training, supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and scheduling 40-50 student employees (primarily undergraduate students). The museum's student docent program provides an enriching and often transformative service learning experience for college students. Student docents facilitate the curriculum for school & group programs.
Public Engagement
Oversight of the Science Forum demos (groups and public), HODS (Hands on Discovery Carts), museum tour programs.
Visitor Services
Work with the Associate Director for Operations & Finance to coordinate logistics for visitor activities and scope of work of Visitor Services Coordinators (VSCs)
Summer Camp Administration
The Program Manager will develop the outline for thematic camp weeks and descriptions and will work with the museum's office manager to build the database for camp explorations FY26. The camp serves about 500 children annually (~1,000 camp slots), provides science enrichment in a safe and fun environment. An early registration begins in February but the outline is submitted to CampDoc by the end of 2025.
The position also contributes to public programs for children and families, and may be assigned other related duties.
Required Qualifications*
A Bachelor's degree in natural science, anthropology, education, museum studies, or equivalent experience. The position requires a working knowledge of natural history topics (e.g. evolutionary biology, ecology, anthropology, astronomy), and at least 1-2 years of experience planning and/or teaching related topics in a science setting with diverse audiences.
Candidates should demonstrate skills in the following areas: strong personnel management and mentoring; program facilitation; curriculum development; detail oriented in planning, scheduling, budget compliance; customer service, communication and program management.
Experience with registration software is preferred.
Work Schedule
This is a temporary position with a maximum of 30 hours per week for approximately 6 months. The work schedule will be primarily weekdays based on programming needs but there may be some weekends and evenings required. This position is based onsite.
