Specialty Pharmacy Services supports a growing range of patient populations, including Transplant, Hepatitis, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatology, Oncology, and many other disease states. Our team is committed to guiding patients throughout their entire treatment journey by providing comprehensive support?ranging from timely financial counseling and clinical education to reliable mail-order medication delivery.

Specialty Pharmacy Technicians work within one of two operational areas. Requirements, duties, and responsibilities?align?respectively. Cross coverage and movement between teams is possible dependent on departmental and patient care needs.

Responsibilities*

Pharmacy Technician duties may include:

  • Answer incoming and outgoing communications to/from patients, arranging timely shipment and delivery of medications.
  • Act as liaison between prescribers, insurance PBMs, and outside pharmacies.
  • ?Work closely with clinical, medication access, and distribution teams to ensure timely patient care.
  • Type and adjudicate prescriptions.
  • Investigate and resolve Third-Party Rejections.
  • Document all patient interactions in appropriate systems and databases.
  • Prepare non-sterile compound medications.
  • Filling patient prescriptions
  • Organize and store filled prescription medications utilizing Smart-Shelf storage.
  • ?Manually package medications for shipment.
  • Assist in stocking and storage of inventory.
  • Maintain and replenish automated filling PODS.
  • Spend most of a shift standing or walking, often walking >5 miles. Staff are regularly required to lift, push, or pull boxes or carts weighing >20 pounds
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Pharmacy Technician Associate:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • One or more years of relevant retail/specialty pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Follow oral and written instruction, must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.

Pharmacy Technician Intermediate:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
  • Two or more years of relevant retail/specialty pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Follow oral and written instruction, must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.

Pharmacy Technician Senior:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Three or more years of relevant retail/specialty pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Follow oral and written instruction, must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.

Pharmacy Tech Grad:

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eligible for licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan Pharmacy, or currently licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan (Temporary License or Full License)

Desired Qualifications*

  • Completion of a Pharmacy technician training program.
  • Basic algebra.
  • Proficient computer skills. (Epic/MiChart, WAM, Jabber/Finesse, Microsoft Suite).
  • Experience in adjudicating and preparing non-sterile compounds.

Licensure & Certification

The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support technicians to become certified and licensed.

Work Schedule

This is a day shift position Monday through Friday with hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Closed weekends and holidays. Subject to change based on business needs.

Work Locations

This position is located at Joy Rd Service Center.

Modes of Work

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
